Taking just two to three minutes to mentally rest throughout the day can have a major impact on your overall mental health and well-being. How do you recharge?
Training Tip Tuesday: LOOP it! I am a big fan of using the same loops over and over in my bike and run training. I use repetitive loops for a variety of reasons. If I'm feeling really good in training, then using loops allows me to try and go faster each loop, or try to go faster than the same bike or run the week before. This helps to track progress in training or fitness. If I'm feeling particularly tired or having a rough day of training, using loops helps as well, because I can turn off the screen on my devices (or not even use a watch/bike computer) for the day and just go out and complete the same loop/loops that I always do without being bogged down that I'm running way slower than the week before. I'll look at the time when I leave the house, but leave my watch at home, and go run a loop I know by heart and know the distance, and then I can check the time when I'm back to the house. As a lot of us are training inside right now, some days you just want to go hard, get a great workout in, and then be done and off the treadmill or bike trainer. This sort of day is very good for short intervals that make an hour go by very fast. An example of a workout like this would be a 10-15minute warm up, and then 20x1minute on, 1minute off. This is great for either the bike or the run. 1minuters are deceptively hard because you can go super hard for 1 minute and then recover but by the 12th, 13th, 14th, etc...it will burn! But this makes 40minutes fly by and then do a short cool down. You can also do more or less- 10x 1minute fast/1minute recovery or up to 30x 1minute fast/1minute recovery. You could also shorten them to 30seconds on/30seconds off for a given amount of time. These are great efforts that will help fitness but can be less stressful mentally to get through. - @HJacksonRacing
"I do a lot of strength work for swimming, biking and running year round, but especially with races postponed, I have returned to largely aerobic and strength based training. So for Tuesday's training, a common go-to for me are running hills or doing BIG Gear interval efforts on my bike. A good example is: 5x30second hills, jog back down to the bottom for recovery and then do a total of 3-6rounds. Or another one is distance based hills- 8x800meter hill repeats. This might be easier on a treadmill because you can set your treadmill at a 4-6% grade and a half mile will take a bit longer than the 30second hills (where it can get tough to get the hill grade AND the speed of the treadmill up and back down within the 30seconds). On the bike, I will do a set of 5x 5minute big gear efforts, so very low RPM just really pushing and pulling with all your strength as you turn your crank.
