Marvin "Smitty" Smith masterclass

"Smitty" Smith gave a tremendous performance and masterclass in drumming with his trio at the Thornton School of Music Tuesday, March 6, 2018, following the memorial service for our fallen comrade Professor Ndugu Chancler. Smitty felt that the "show must go on" and the class was dedicated to Ndugu's memory. Thank you for the great drumming and class last night, Smitty Smith!

Got triplets? We just stumbled on this gem of musical outtake history from the session archives of Freedom Jazz Dance. This conversation about triplets with Miles Davis and Tony Williams (and @herbiehancockofficial chiming in) takes place between take 10 and take 11 of the original recording session. It’s hard to believe Tony Williams uttered the words, “I can’t play that fast”. Maybe he actually was human?? Regardless, enjoy this rare clip, because, well… it’s Miles, Tony and Herbie talking about triplets. 🙌 #Triplets #MilesDavis #TonyWilliams #HerbieHancock #Jazz

In memory and celebration of Valerie Bishop’s life, Herbie Hancock played the most beautiful rendering of “Maiden Voyage” imaginable. He came back on-stage later to play with the excellent combo from the Monk Institute (including USC Thornton School of Music alums Alex Hahn and Jon Hatamiya). Bravo, Alex and Jon.

USC jazz drumming students Ian Hubbell (class of 2018) and Andre Sudol (class of 2021) videotaping educational content for the new Vic Firth "Inside the Studio" series. Organist Jacob Silverman pictured as well. We used my personal studio and drums for this. A great experience for all of the drummers who participated. Great work, gang!
