Curated by Michael Rababy this book features the work of 110 photographers from all over California – celebrating what makes our diverse, inclusive, forward-thinking state so great. This is Rababy’s visual mixtape, featuring the greatest hits of friends’ and colleagues’ work that I’ve enjoyed through my years as a curator. I hope to share the excitement I have for great images the way I’ve shared my favorite rare grooves, B-sides, and bootleg recordings over my lifetime. from hive alum Ave Pildas:

"I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. By the time I landed in Los Angeles in December 1970, I had also resided in Pittsburg, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Basel, Switzerland, all cities with classic cold winters. I was immediately impressed by the warm and sunny weather of Southern California, and fascinated by the novel expressions of Christmas in what was to me was a green, summery environment. I began to photograph California Christmases in 1971, and have done so ever since. Pictures from this series have been published worldwide in many international journals. Annually, I mail a California Christmas image as a postcard to my friends.

This year I selected sixteen of my favorite California Christmas images and produced a set of postcards to sell. Wrapped in cellophane, the set makes an easy-to-send gift. Or mail the cards individually to friends and family. Order now! $22. includes shipping via USPS."

Between 3,000 and 6,000 homeless people, the largest concentration of homeless in the United States, convene on the streets of Los Angeles' Skid Row on any given day. The city tops the nation with an estimated 44,000 chronically homeless people, so tent cities are common sites under freeway overpasses, and along streets in neighborhoods rich and poor. On July 4, 2016, a national day of celebration, I drove to Skid Row to document this dire situation. To serve as a backdrop, I hung a large American flag upside down. The upside down flag is a symbol of distress.

One of the first volunteer subjects was dressed in a flag bikini. She asked if I would buy her a bottle of water. I gave her a dollar after I photographed her. She quickly reappeared with a bullhorn and announced that I was offering a dollar to each person willing to pose. Soon a line formed around the block. One of my favorite subjects was 'Reefer Girl' who was smoking a joint and attracting others to pose.

Over the course of one hour, I gave away $100 and shot four hundred pictures. The images reveal a cross section of Skid Row residents of all ages and races: kids playing, proud vets boasting of their service, couples idling, fathers and sons conversing, and individuals strutting as fashion statements I'd never seen before. They seemed lost, happy, angry, pensive, and humble.

When I returned two weeks later to distribute the prints I had promised to some of my subjects, I found many of them still present, although some had disappeared.

how about a break from all the madness...

I'm excited to announce my latest book project:

california love - a visual mixtape

features the work of 110 photographers from all over the state. I’ve published two other books, “american bachelor”, and “folsom street food court”, but this is my biggest project to date. this is my visual mixtape, featuring the greatest hits of friends’ and colleagues’ work that I’ve enjoyed through my years as a curator. I hope to share the excitement I have for great images the way I’ve shared my favorite rare grooves, b-sides, and bootleg recordings over my lifetime.

“I realize that much of california’s romance is passing away, and I intend to see to it that I, at least, shall preserve as much of that romance as is possible for me.”
—jack london to a sacramento reporter in 1910

in addition to being a photographer, I’ve been the photo curator at the hive gallery in downtown los angeles since 2015, and for 2020 I wanted to do something that addressed the election - which I knew would be a very important one. I've been involved in and visited many politically-based exhibits in the past, but it's easy for that work to become dated. also, there's so much negativity in politics, and we are so divided, that I wanted to do something more positive.

I’ve had the chance to get to know many photographers throughout california while curating and being involved through the los angeles center of photography (LACP), so I had a pretty strong vision to create a book that would come out around the time of the election - celebrating what makes california great.
