A New Exhibit: Protecting Manassas

The Manassas Museum
9101 Prince William Street
Manassas, VA 20110

Friday, May 1, 2015 10:00 AM thru Wednesday, July 15, 2015 5:00 PM
In the late 1800s, when Manassas was still a growing little town, volunteers retrieved buckets and ladders from the train depot and ran to fight fires, while a town sergeant patrolled the streets with nothing but a nightstick and handcuffs. Protecting Manassas, a new Manassas Museum exhibit opening on May 1, explores the evolution of the police, fire and rescue departments from these humble beginnings to their central place in today’s community. The exhibit will feature both historic and modern artifacts from both the police and fire services and activities for young visitors. The exhibit coincides with this summer’s 2015 World Police and Fire Games, an athletic competition held throughout the region and runs through July 15.

Crowds gather for Helicopter Easter Egg Drop

MANASSAS, VA. -- At this Easter egg hunt, 5,000 eggs rain down from the sky. It's Sunday morning and three-year-old Elias Ramirez, who loves helicopters, was waiting for the second annual Helicopter Easter Egg Drop to begin.

He was there with his parents and twin brother. The family traveled hours from Shenandoah to Northern Virginia Community College's Manassas Campus for the egg drop. Elias' mother, Laura Ramirez, says she found out about the event on Facebook.

Hundreds of kids waited patiently for the chopper to drop candy filled-plastic eggs onto an open field. Then after the kids got an official "3,2,1" countdown, they stormed the field to fill their containers with eggs.

Even some of the parents were out to help their children, perhaps forgetting for a few minutes, that they weren't children anymore.

The egg drop is put on by Impact Church. "We love the tradition of Easter egg hunting," Pastor Brandon Hembree says. "We wanted to do something brand new for the community, something that's going to bring our NOVA family together."
