2020 DIRTY DONUT CANCELED

We are very disappointed to announce that the 2020 version of the Dirty Donut will not be able to take place this May 31, 2020. We have explored many options on ways to modify the race, and purposely waited to see if there would be any way to salvage a race for this year, but the window of possibilities has now closed.

Many of our pre registrations have been from participants that outside of Michigan. For those people as well as those in Michigan, I want to fully explain our situation here. Michigan currently has two executive orders in place that severely impact our event. Well before Michigan’s “Stay at Home” executive order, (which has been recently extended until May 15 and could possibly be extended again), went into effect, another executive order was issued in early March, preventing gatherings over 50 people. We do not see this order being lifted anytime soon, let alone before our May 31 race date. Additionally, all Michigan schools have been ordered closed for the remainder of the 2020 school year. This includes any gatherings in and on school grounds. It is our understanding that this restriction is not planned to be lifted before our scheduled May 31 race date. This would not allow us to use the Martin School grounds as we originally planned for our event parking, bathrooms, locker rooms, awards area, kids race grounds, and concession stands. In addition, we would be without the many wonderful volunteers that the school provides.

We will now look forward to the 2021 Dirty Donut, Sunday June 6, 2021, with the intent of hosting an unforgettably epic event. Until then, please be safe, enjoy life and cycling, and support those who support cycling, especially our many sponsors and partners.

All that were pre-registered for the race were sent an email yesterday. In that email they were asked to click on a survey link with the following options.

1 – Hold your 2020 registration for the 2021 Dirty Donut, Sunday June 6, 2021.
2 – Get a refund for the 2020 Dirty Donut minus the service fee that was paid at registration.
3 – Get a partial refund and donate the rest to Make-A-Wish of Michigan.

Having to make the decision to cancel has weighed heavily on my mind over the last several weeks. I could not be more upset to have to make this announcement. We were beyond excited to showcase our new race venue and all of the improvements we had planned for this year. Based on the registration numbers just before all of our lives changed, people love what we are trying to do with this race. Before the outbreak, we were on pace to sell the race out at 1,000 racers a few weeks before race day. In just our second year, this was nothing short of AMAZING and I can’t begin to thank you for your support of this race. It completely makes all of the hard work worthwhile. Thank you for your loyalty, and I can’t wait to celebrate cycling and the Dirty Donut on Sunday June 6, 2021.

We have not yet made a decision on the 2020 Dirty Donut. We are waiting to see what our elected officials say about social distancing and how many people may allowed to gather in one place by race day. As this becomes clearer, we will make a decision on how is best to proceed in the very near future.

Keep your head up in these trying times everyone.

On a lighter note, we thought we would share another part of the Dirty Donut awards medal production process. These medals are all ready for clear coating. After they dry we will put the bike chains and neck ribbons on them so they will be ready for the big day.

ATTENTION:
As of today, the Dirty Donut is still scheduled for May 31, 2020. We realize that this current plan could completely change as new information as well as the governmental response continues to be updated from day to day.

Several races and events that were scheduled over the next few weeks have been or will be canceled. Many of them are scheduling make up dates in the late summer or early fall. We think that it is important to note that many of the race organizers who have or will be adversely affected, depend on their events as their full-time employment and only source of income. We at the Dirty Donut are fortunate to not be in this precarious position.

As race directors search for and select new dates, the fall cycling schedule is quickly filling to capacity. If there becomes a need to cancel our planned May 31, 2020 race date, we will take a look to see what may still be available later in the year, but have little interest in selecting a date that will conflict with another planned or rescheduled race date. We want to do what is best for not only our loyal racers but for cycling as a whole by supporting races that may depend on their rescheduled races as their main source of income. If we can’t race on May 31, 2020, we will most likely completely cancel the Dirty Donut for 2020 and look forward to our June 5 or 6, 2021 planned date for the Dirty Donut. In future years, the Dirty Donut will be held on the same weekend as National Donut Day, which is the first Friday in June every year.

We are very thankful for those of you who have already pre-registered for this year’s race. We very much appreciate your LOYALTY to the race. Pre registrations are extremely important to all race directors, but even more to our type of race. For example – We have to plan for several thousand donuts to be made just before the race so that they are fresh. If 800 people were to register in the last week, I think you can see how difficult it could be to make sure we have enough donuts for the race. We also are quite conscious of making way too many donuts, just to have them go to waste after the race. Using this example, you can see why pre-registration is so very important to an event like ours.

If the 2020 Dirty Donut is canceled, we will offer deferments to the 2021 Dirty Donut. We are also looking into other options to include possible full or partial refunds for those that have already registered. As of now our registration service is not offering refunds on their service fees associated with refunds of any kind. Please rest assured that if we have to cancel, we will to everything we can to do right by you, and keep your loyalty to the pre-registration system.

If we are fortunate enough to be able to race this May, we realize that we may be one of the first opportunities for our gravel racing family of cyclists to get together and celebrate the sport we all love. This could result in a rapid sellout. If this should happen, we will coordinate with local entities to see if we can accommodate additional entries.

Have you heard about our Dirty Donut KIDS RACE? It will be super awesome and like no other. Kids under 12 will compete in different age groups for FREE in our Celebration Zone between the Sprint race awards and Donut race awards. This race is designed with kids’ interests in mind and will have many elements of a Cyclocross race, but geared towards kids. Riders race over small ramp flyovers, under a limbo stick, slalom through traffic cones, and cross 2x4 barriers (most kids will dismount and push their bike over, while the older kids may be able to hop over them). In keeping with the spirit of the Dirty Donut, all kids get to stop and eat a donut hole along the way, just like in the adult race! When they cross the finish line, they’ll receive a Dirty Donut Medal to remember the day!

How about a brand-new set of Velocity Wheels, or one of 2 Sportcrafters training rollers? Yea that’s right you could have 10 extra chances to win in addition to the 1 raffle ticket everyone gets at packet pickup.

02/20/2020

The million dollar question with gravel racing is what size tire to use and then what kind of bike. The Dirty Donut course tends to be hard packed and rather fast around race time as long as it is dry or just a little damp. If it is wet from rain it becomes more of a challenge. We have a few very short sections (half mile) in the 41 and 61 mile races that are on seasonal roads which are not as well maintained as a regular dirt road. If it is very dry these can be a little sandy and can slow a person down with skinny tires.

Very serious racers will ride a gravel specific or cyclocross bike because they will accept wider tires than most road bikes. If it is dry and fast you may see a few very seasoned racers on ROAD BIKES with the widest tires that their bike will accept. To break it down by percentages, I would say that 5-10 percent of the field will ride a road bike. Around 80 percent will ride a cyclocross or gravel specific bike, and 15-20 percent will use a mountain bike. We also have single speed and fat bikes, but we encourage them to enter their respective division for a better chance at awards. Although Fat Tire and Single Speed are eligible for all awards categories they are at a more sizeable disadvantage over other types of bikes.

I would say that the most common tire width used for the Dirty Donut is between 30-35mm. Below is the most common tire widths that each style of bike will accept -

Road 20-30mm
Gravel/Cyclocross 30-50mm
Mountain 50-80
Fat Tire - Our rules say that the smallest tire you can race on is a 97mm or 3.7 inch wide tire. WE WILL BE CHECKING BOTH TIRES AT THE FINISH LINE. Wider tires are welcome as well.
