The evolution of the #PPI #001 @ironmanstewart Toyota. PPI build in late 1983, early 1984, truck complete and racing in class 7 (1984), then upgraded front and rear suspension (wider, note front fenders) in 1985 to race class 1, sold to race team in Mexico in 1989, swapped hands a few times (and paint jobs), purchased in 2016, restoration started and still continuing. The #ModernMotors #chenowth1000 was delivered to Lynn Chenowth today, made a turnaround trip and then went straight home to clean out the garage. I “Other” @ironmanstewart vehicle is now back up front so I can finish the restoration on it. Don’t get too excited, we’re moving at the end of the month so it will take about 3-4 weeks to get the NEW shop up and running since it doesn’t even have power right now. I seriously can’t wait to get started on this truck again, it’s been too long. @toyotausa @toyota_trd @bfgoodrichtires @mcsafety1 @centerlinewheels @transaxleengineering @bilsteinus @collinsmotorsports @bearracecars @swayaway1 @pyrotect @darrylputman

Absolutely one of my favorite off road racing photos of all time. This picture of Robby gordon made it onto a poster and I would LOVE to find one for my collection. I was told Jonn Herzberger took the photo, does anyone know for sure? This was taken at the 1990 Baja 500 which I believe Robby won Overall. Little Easter egg here: Robby would put little sayings on the lower windshield valence. I remember one of them saying “This is an E ticket ride”. I can’t make out this one but I’m sure it was done with a snicker.

Who’s got one they want to donate to my collection? Maybe trade for an old school HDRA poster we did back in 1992?

Starting to pack my off road racing library and I can’t believe all the stuff I have accumulated over the years. So far I have twelve 27 gallon totes FULL of race magazines like Dusty Times, Hot VWs, VW Trends, Off-Road, 4 wheeler, DirtSports, Racer, Dirt Pilot and of course old racing programs. I’ve also got probably another 8 boxes of misc stuff. As of right now I’m about 75% packed (just the office) so it will be ready for the big move come the end of July. In the middle of all this I still have to finish artwork for clients. With that being said I have suspended taking on new artwork until after the move. 🤦🏻‍♂️ #movingsucks @ Racers Only Motorsport Designs

I’m guessing this BFGoodrich Tires poster was for the 1980 or 81 racing season. Ivan "Ironman" Stewart was racing the Coco Corral Fillmore Ford while Frank Scoop Vessels was driving the BFG Blazer. Dona Adams was in the class 3 Jeep and Bud Feldkamp/Malcolm Smith wheeled the Rainbow Wallets class 1 Funco. Rounding out the team was Rod Hall/Jim Fricker class 4 Dodge. I was lucky enough to score this poster from none other than Coco Corral himself after a chance meeting at Smiths grocery store a few years ago. What is your favorite poster? Post it up!

06/23/2020

Jack Johnson, I believe, is one of the most underrated off road racers of all time. I will also go on to say if not one of the best off road racers ever. That statement is debatable but one that would need to be considered. In off road racing this guy has done it all from bikes, to buggies, to 4x4 trucks and all the way to the premier class, Trophy Trucks.

His off road career started at the tender age of 8 years old and then started winning major off road races at the age of 18. Jack proved his worth as he was teamed up with motorcycle legend Larry Roeseler in the late 70’s and then Al Baker in the early 80’s to win 4 Baja 1000’s Overall.

In the early 80’s he started racing class 1 buggies for some guy named Butch Dean out of Las Vegas. He was an instant success. In the short time racing class 1 buggies he won numerous races overall and class championships, then was quickly being courted for a factory ride by Nissan.

The move to Nissan resulted in more wins and a championship and then was picked up by 3 more factory teams over the years including Jeep, Dodge and Ford.

As Jacks career started to wind down in the 2000’s and old injuries forcing him into a hip replacement, he did what most athletes do........he went back to racing BIKES in the over 50 class! Jack would win a string of Baja 1000’s on a motorcycle to close out his career but not before he got to team up with one of his idols Malcolm Smith in 2004.

If his record isn’t impressive enough, all you have to do is look at his 1979 Baja 500 OVERALL win on his Husqvarna. What’s so impressive about that win? Well, he did it SOLO. Larry Roeseler was scheduled to team up with him but injured his leg prerunning. Jack being the fierce competitor he was could not find a suitable replacement for Larry (imagine that), so he figured he had a better chance of winning racing on his own then handing the bike off halfway through the race. No one was in favor of this decision as they said it couldn’t be done and he was crazy. Well, Jack did it and in the process won the IRONMAN trophy.....the only one to EVER win one on a motorcycle!

His list of accomplishments are below but ONLY for SCORE and HDRA. I can’t find the numerous wins and championships in his early
Days of racing motorcycles and his days racing buggies in the SNORE series. The list is very incomplete but here’s just a quick look at his accomplishments.

Oh yea, did I mention he also was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2016?

Do you know this man? If not you should. This is Bob Bower. Why should you know him? Well, if you’re an off road guy and have raced any of the Baja races you should.

Long story short, Bob worked for BFG for many years, still does work for them even today but back in the late 70’s he was helping out with the new off road program. In 1982 he was put in charge of the desert program. With a budget to laugh at he was suppose to try and make some teams happy. Instead of forking our all that money between a few of the top teams he sat down with them and listened.

After a few days of pondering their input Bob decided what these guys really needed was pit support. With the 5 large teams BFG was supporting, if they shared pits at the big races it would drastically reduce their logistics and personnel needed. BFG Pits was born.

Bob was also not one to sit on the sidelines and he loved being in the right seat. As it turned out Bob was one of the best in the right seat because he was the “Race car driver whisperer”. Keeping the driver focused and calm was his specialty. Another thing was how he prepared for races. He would spend more time prerunning than the driver. Not only would he prerun the race course he would prerun the HWY’s and chase roads. Too many times valuable time was lost due to the chase crews having a hard time finding the broken race car. The last straw was being lost at the Baja 1000 and stuck in the mud for 2 days after getting lost in Baja. Bob said never again. Those maps found in the back of your BFG books......that was Bob.

BFG saw what he was doing for the teams that he was riding with and asked to implement them into the BFG books. Bob being a safety guy thought it was an excellent idea and turned all of his maps and notes over to a guy named Frank DeAngelo.....who might sound familiar as he’s also a member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Frank has taken Bobs maps and pit support and expanded them even more and added many more details over the years making it the most sought after book and pit service when racing Baja.

Last but not least, if you do race Baja you know about the “What about you” letter. This year will be the 20th anniversary of the letter as it was written for the Baja 2000. Bob has witnessed one too many accidents and has lost some good friends. The HWY is the most dangerous place in Baja and he wanted everyone to know that and to think about it while they were out there enjoying the sport that they loved.

I’d like to do more of these on this page as I think it’s important to know the people that have given so much to the sport.

Thanks to Sean Hoglund for info.

I went through some old photos while looking for something else and found artwork I had done over the years for @robbygordon. I’ll guarantee I have at least 5 or 6 more designs I can’t find right now but here are some of the early ones. The first design I ever did for him was the #LaVictoria Ranger back in 1991 (top left). I traded the artwork for a ride in the truck at Barstow. Robby took myself and my wife @mstrace2018 for rides throughout the day and then bought us lunch at, where else, @deltaco. I started a wonderful relationship with the Gordon family that continues to this day. Enjoy. @ford @bfgoodrichtires @tecate @valvoline @menardshomeimprovement @cingularwireless @copenhagentabacco

From the February 1985 issue of #VWtrends magazine comes the story of the 1984 Baja 1000. Us old folk remember that it would take about 2 months to see the full race report printed in a magazine back then so when you were getting ready for the Parker 400 the coverage of the Baja 1000 was just hitting the magazine stands. One of the best stories of that event was the Larry Noel/Tim Kennedy class 1 entry. They lead class 1 early then started losing gears in the transmission. They soldiered and raced the remaining 436 miles (total miles in 1984 was 736) with only 3rd gear and went on to take the win in class 1 (9th Overall). Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee #MarkMcMillin would score his 3rd (at that time) OVERALL win in his class 2 unlimited Macadu Chenowth.

1995 San Felipe 250 and the Terrible Herbst Motorsports built class 1 with Chenowth glass. This car preceded the Truggy and rode very low to the ground compared to most cars like it. The car still exists and is located in the Herbst race shop. One of the coolest things about this photo is the man standing behind the car, the same man who was behind the scenes building race cars for a majority of the most successful off road racers to come out of Las Vegas.......Butch Dean. And to think I was trying to wait until he got out of the picture frame to take the picture but i was in a hurry.....so glad he didn’t. I’m thinking this is from the 1989 Nevada 500. @1baja5x in his brand new class 2 unlimited (Pre Butch era). Pretty sure it debuted at this race as I took quite a few photos of it. Talked to Larry about this truck the other day and the CV’s were custom at $26,000 a SET! Turns out this would be the demise of the truck as the CV bill would eat up the budget as they only lasted about 50 miles. They did get the CV’s figured out and the truck started coming into its own by the Baja 1000, actually leading the race, only to succumb to a blown head gasket a couple hundred miles into the race. The truck was retired after that then sold at the GM bankruptcy auction about 10 years ago. The suspension was definitely “out-of-the-box thinking”. @bfgoodrichtires @bilsteinus @americanracing @mobil1 @chevrolet #americanthunder #nelsonandnelsonracing @lanternmarkindustries
