THE FRENCH DISPATCH | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures

I love a stinky cheese analogy—there are some things you can either entirely love or hate, no in-between. It can apply to movements, artists, people, and literally, cheese. Love or hate, despise or adore, sometimes the dichotomy holds true. The point is that stinky cheese gets a reaction, a reason for people to get riled up, have an opinion to share. For two decades, Wes Anderson is the rankest cheese possible. So many adjectives: whimsical, pretentious, idiosyncratic, contrived blow-hard, genius; I pulled those from a few different reviews of his films. Love or hate, you will have some reaction, usually a visceral one to any film that Anderson does, and his latest, The French Dispatch is no exception. A living dollhouse of fictional biographical vignettes about a French-based American magazine in the 1960s and 70s, this feature focuses on the deadest of deadpan editors and four of his star journalists, each one specializing in separate esoteric humanities. As with many of Anderson's films, nostalgia, a palpable homage to subject glows seamlessly from one scene to the next: in this case, France, the May 68 student protests, and Anderson's self-professed love affair with The New Yorker—one can imagine a young Anderson flipping through copies of the magazine for decades, piecing together a collage of love and truth from the depths of his innermost soul. The film is splashed with cross-media exploration as we switch from color to black and white, a play-within-film, and the scraping flourishes of New Yorker-inspired drawings. It is complex and manic, crazed and subtle, ingeniously biting and fantastically seamless, the stinkiest cheese of them all.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain - Official Trailer | Prime Video

Cat people are mostly hairless cats. Sociable on their terms, coy, playful, sly mysteries seemingly full of contradictory self-assurance and insecurity. In The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, the titular character is an artist/cat person whose multichromatic portraits of felines in the Victorian period might have single-handedly altered the perceptions of them from loathsome curs to loving companions. In this biopic, Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Wain with Claire Foy as Emily, Wain’s wife and caretaker. After the death of his father, Wain was forced to quit his teaching job and take care of his five sisters and mother, all the while trying to find his artistic voice and battle mental illness. He was a synesthete, a person who involuntarily experiences sensations through multiple senses, i.e., someone can hear music and a certain taste will form in their mouth. Wain was a visual synesthete who saw electricity in the air, beauty in the grotesque, and joy in the ostracized. The beating heart of this film is the relationship between Wain and Emily. Ranging from their scandalous marriage to Wain finding his voice and having his illustrations of anthropomorphized cats mocking the trends of the day turn into a global hit, this biopic is a deep dive into the mental landscape of artists and the mentally ill. While the film does not gloss over Wain’s controversial hospitalization, the film is a mindful reminder that perception can be explained, neurodivergence is not insanity, and humanism, connectivity, can be the salve that brings people back from the brink.

Dune - Official Main Trailer - Warner Bros. UK & Ireland

OPENING TONIGHT AT 7:00!

In a 1983 interview, Frank Herbert explained the main thrust of his Dune protagonist, Paul Atreides: "Because no matter how good the messiah, other people enter the scene. Other people are attracted to the power structure. Every messiah I studied in history was a reformer." The six-book series began as a collection of serials in the iconic Analog Science Fiction and Fact. By 1965, Dune had won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel, and Herbert had established himself as the new godfather of sci-fi. While a film was infamously made by David Lynch in 1984, and then remade into a 2000 How-did-I-not-hear-about-this? miniseries, the latest Dune by Denis Villeneuve is a different hydra altogether—a multi-headed monster of undeniable blockbuster, cerebral sci-fi, sweeping epic, and compelling coming-of-age romance. Set in a futuristic but culturally medieval society where powerful families enact feudal laws that hinder any waft of dissent, the film follows the Atreides family: Leto (Oscar Isaac), Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and Paul (Timothée Chalamet). As Leto is given stewardship over the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, the only known planet to be a natural source of melange or “spice,” a drug that lengthens life and is the only method that provides the supernatural levels of thought that make light-speed possible, Paul begins having dreams of a mysterious woman lost amongst the immeasurable dunes. What unfolds in this first of two planned films is an intricate deconstruction of politics, nepotism, tribal snobbery, and eugenics as the Atreides family must fight back against internal subterfuge, the natural perils of Arrakis, and Paul facing moralistic quandaries of anti-colonialism, xenophobia, savior complexes, and power dynamics.

The Velvet Underground — Official Trailer | Apple TV+

The Velvet Underground is Todd Haynes' experimental documentary about the eponymous group's role as the connective tissue between the Beats and glam rock scene. Haynes has created a Pop Art mosaic of John Cale, Maureen Tucker, a posthumous Reed and Warhol, with still shots of 60s happenings in luminous basements, contextual news clippings, and bright blips of collective splendor during the peak of the Factory days with Warhol, Ultra Violet, Candy Darling, and experimental film titans such as Stan Brakhage and Kenneth Anger. But as The Velvet Underground were only around for six years, there is a lot of ground to cover in a short amount of time, and Haynes' performs it with aplomb. Using the mosaic method, the documentary plays like an experimental autobiography by the Velvet Underground. Wanton, rough, and riffing off the unknown, this is the band's self-made eulogy dismembering its place in the pop canon, and through this radical candor, we see that the group was more than just Lou Reed or John Cale or Nico or Warhol—they were a postmodern beacon of play and absurdism, deconstructing language, form, and musical narrative. A multi-dimensional wave of sonic distortion, pushing boundaries of music, sexuality, rebellion, and celebrity. Haynes plays into this Pop Art, postmodern landscape perfectly, inviting you to take a dip into the unknown.

I'm Your Man Trailer #1 (2021) | Movieclips Indie

If you could create, tweak, perfect the ideal mate, except that mate just also happened to be a bio-genetically engineered humanoid robot...would you? None of the irritating trifles. Pettiness, jealousy, possessiveness, insecurity, all out the window. Now, it is a love built on binary and algorithms, but isn’t that just dating? Researching, reading the data? Noticing patterns? You know, except for the whole robot thing. In I’m Your Man, Alma (Maren Eggert) is a hyper-focused academic engulfed by her scholarly pursuits. At the behest of her boss, along with a pot-sweetening deal to fund her research, Alma agrees to take part in a three-week study with her own engineered perfect match, Tom (Dan Stevens). At first, Alma is hostile, if not outright cruel. But as the days continue, Tom’s binary stiffness begins to adjust, and something more human, connective, even vulnerable begins to take place, causing Alma to address her myopic ambition and stoicism. Quietly stirring, this German futuristic rom-com is a joyous, topical palate cleanser to our tech-centric world.

LAMB Trailer (2021)

Prepare to suspend your disbelief. Lamb is a mythological folk-fest with unsettling splashes of dry Scandinavian humor; a picture of parental grief and delusion; or maybe an irrational, isolationist nightmare with archetypal elements of human vs. supernatural. Even simplifying the main plot point would spoil the essence of its bonkers appeal. Suffice to say, the story follows Maria (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason), an Icelandic sheep farming couple who are grieving over the death of their child. When by happenstance (or is it?) nature provides the opportunity to become parents to, let’s say...an exceptionally unique child, they jump at the chance. Rich in an atmosphere of looming tannins, a pulsing, primal score, and a scorching performance from Rapace, Lamb is the perfect appetizer to get you ready for the witching hour of autumn.

Luzzu – Official Trailer

Our VTIFF @ THE SAVOY weekend kicks off tomorrow with LUZZU at 5:50pm.

This debut film from writer-director-editor Alex Camilleri takes its title from the small wooden boats used by the traditional fishermen of the Maltese islands. When Jesmark, played by nonprofessional actor Jesmark Scicluna, can no longer support his family on the fishing trade practiced by his forebears, he must weigh his birthright against the realities of the modern world. This compelling story captures a man and a culture in crisis, teetering between the old world and the new. Scicluna’s gripping performance, caged like a feral animal as the twin pressures of family and money close in, won him the Sundance Jury Prize at the 2021 festival.

Locally sponsored by Woodbelly Pizza in Montpelier.

FAYA DAYI (2021) - Documentary - HD Trailer - English Subtitles

In her hypnotic documentary feature, Jessica Beshir explores the coexistence of everyday life and its mythical undercurrents. Focusing on the rural Oromo community of farmers and the harvesting of the country’s most lucrative cash crop, Khat—a leaf Sufi Muslims chewed for centuries for religious meditation—Beshir constructs a dreamlike film that uses light, texture, and sound to illuminate the spiritual lives of people whose experiences often become fodder for ripped-from-the-headlines tales of migration.
