What is the WPA collection at the T.W. Wood Gallery: A Museum of American Art ?
The Federal Art Project (1935-1943) was a New Deal program to fund America’s arts projects under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It sustained some 10,000 artists during the Great Depression.

The WPA highlights social resistance art work from the 1930's and 1940's. This was a period of time in America's history where industrialization and economic development failed; leaving millions of Americans out of work and destitute. The period called the "Great Depression" was the deepest and longest lasting economic downturn of the Western Industrialized world. The WPA was developed to put Americans, including artists, back to work. The T.W. Wood Gallery's WPA collection spotlights a dramatic moment in American history as the nation struggled and sparked relief projects to help create a new economy. This was a convulsive time in American history and WPA artists were required to stay within their state and to portray local subjects, which offer a diverse portrayal of life in the United States from this period

Voices of Home — Vermont Folklife Center

Friday Oct 1st Reception in our Community Gallery
4-8pm during ArtWalk

Voice of Home is an audio-visual storytelling project launched in 2015 by Corrine Yonce when she served as an Americorps VISTA volunteer with the Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition. This exhibit brings together work from two of Yonce’s collaborative efforts, Voices of South Burlington Community Housing and Voices of Decker Towers.

The Vermont Folklife Center’s mission is to broaden, strengthen, and deepen our understanding of Vermont; to assure a repository for our collective cultural memory; and to strengthen communities by building connections among the diverse peoples of Vermont.

On display at the Center for Arts and Learning, Montpelier, VT September 27, 2021 - December 2021. Voices of Home explores the experiences of Vermonters living in affordable housing through audio recordings and painted portraits.

A new reason to stop by, even if you’ve been here before.

Join us Friday, October 1, from 4-8 pm for a reception celebrating our newly acquired Wood painting, "Lighting the Corncob"! This beautiful work demonstrates Wood's mastery of light, and is accompanied by the actual lamp that he painted.

Made possible by a generous gift from Judith and James Pizzagalli, this new addition to the Wood Collections is on view in the Wood Room through December 23, 2022.

It's #GivingTuesday! We're glad that during this strange year, we've been able to offer musicians and artists studio spaces for *actual* remote work, to escape from all the virtual work happening at home. We miss seeing you all at art exhibitions, group rehearsals, and events, but if you can help us get there, we'll see you again in person in 2021. If you can, please consider a donation to our Annual Fund - and thank you!!

We are so thrilled that we are among the nonprofit recipients of a generous grant from VSECU and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. This funding will make a tremendous difference to the Center for Arts and Learning. It will help us provide safe studio spaces for members of our community during this difficult time as we begin to look towards post-pandemic programs. Thank you to the whole community and to VSECU for making this possible!
