ACS Grant Recipient Kirsten Nyrop Says Effective Cancer Research All Boils Down To Good Communication

“Like so many other things in life, it all boils down to good communication,” says Kirsten Nyrop, PhD, UNC Lineberger member and assistant professor of hematology/oncology. Nyrop just received a $50,000 award from the Integrated Approach to Breast Health Equity Competitive Grant Program, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and Pfizer.

Nyrop’s passion to help patients has strong roots. For many years she enjoyed a career in politics on Capitol Hill, but when her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, she rushed to be by his side. “It was eye-opening for me to see how patients and clinical personnel struggled to communicate and how desperately so many patients need an advocate. “I wanted to help change this, so I returned to UNC and got my PhD. There’s nothing to it, but to do it,” she says about changing her life focus and returning to school.
Through my work in cancer research, I began to see a real disparity in breast cancer survivorship and reoccurrence among white women and black women. “Many of these women were coming in with comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, and many had struggled with keeping a healthy weight for years.” Through her research with focus groups of clinicians and survivors, Nyrop’s hope is to teach clinicians how to talk to their patients about controlling their weight by developing guidelines for clinicians that includes patient-centered language and use preferred words to make an impact.
“There is teachable moment here, as these health care providers have gained their patients’ trust because they have helped cure their cancer, but this window of opportunity doesn’t last forever. We need to be proactive in talking with these women about how taking control of their weight can help them have greater survival rates.”
The result of Nyrop’s research will be a set of communication guidelines that will be distributed to clinicians by ACS and Pfizer.

During Relay USA we want to show our caregivers how much they mean to survivors – whether they drove you to appointments, dropped off a meal, stayed by your side for the whole cancer journey, or just shared a hug or card. Send a photo or :10 second video thanking a caregiver for something they did that you appreciate. We’re looking for big and small gestures to highlight the range of definition of caregiver.

Meet American Cancer Society Patient Navigator, Finly Perdomo. She is an invaluable resource during a patient’s cancer journey, providing guidance and support.

She is continuing to work from home during this crisis to ensure that her patients are supported throughout their treatment. Cancer doesn't stop, so neither have we!

American Cancer Society Patient Navigators Continue to Help Cancer Patients on the Front Line

“You have cancer,” are perhaps the most paralyzing words anyone can hear, producing sheer panic on many levels as thoughts of our future, our family and our treatment cloud our minds. The maze can seem overwhelming, trying to figure out where we will find the best care for our specific type of cancer, and how we will get to those treatments, often times in locations far from our own home. That’s where American Cancer Society Patient Navigators like Finly Perdomo come in, quickly becoming invaluable resources during a patient’s cancer journey.

It’s all in days’ work for Perdomo, who works jointly for the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) in Charlotte, NC. She operates out of Levine where she can be close to the patients who have just received a cancer diagnosis. These days, she is working remotely from her home due to COVID-19 precautions, but she has never been busier. “Just as before the Coronavirus outbreak, patients are looking for answers, they really just want to feel understood and supported,” says Perdomo.

Time is of the essence when someone receives a cancer diagnosis. Wendy Bissette, RN, BS, BSN, who works with Perdomo on a daily basis says, “Finly is passionate about her job and cares deeply for the patients we serve. This is evidenced by her determination, promptness and dedication in finding our patients both lodging, and transportation required for medical care without treatment delays. Any delay of treatment could negatively impact our patients’ survival.”

Clinical social worker, Veronica Kenny-Macpherson, MSW, LCSWA, shares that the services of the ACS patient navigator have been critical for the care of her patients in the Head & Neck clinic, many of whom face enormous barriers to care and travel from great distances to see specialists at Levine Cancer Institute. “One patient recently had to travel from South Carolina, and Finly worked tirelessly to help the patient with arrangements for bus and volunteer drivers to get to Charlotte and hotel accommodations for a series of appointments over several weeks. Finly called the patient regularly to make sure he understood what the arrangements were and how to reach her if there were any issues. The patient expressed his gratitude for the American Cancer Society’s help on every visit.”

During these stressful and uncertain times, Perdomo works hard to put her patients at ease, she adds, “Cancer hasn’t stopped, so neither have we.” #StillAttackingCancer #AmericanCancerSociety #LevineCancerInstitute

Based on current guidance and out of an abundance of caution, the American Cancer Society has extended the suspension of all events through mid-May. This includes any meetings, bank nights, Survivor/Caregiver receptions and RFL events scheduled through May 16, 2020. Events may be canceled, postponed, or held virtually depending on each individual community. We are extremely grateful to all the volunteers, participants, and sponsors who have worked to make Relay For Life events a success. Your efforts will make an impact on those fighting cancer, and we’re looking forward to continuing the conversation with our volunteers virtually on new and creative ways to support Relay For Life.

Amid the uncertainty that surrounds us right now, the one thing that remains constant is that the American Cancer Society will be there for cancer patients when they need us most. Please know your American Cancer Society is here to support you.

For more information about the coronavirus and cancer patients, visit www.cancer.org or call 1-800-227-2345 anytime. In addition to our 24/7 helpline, many of our patient programs such as transportation and lodging assistance remain up and running with specific precautionary measures in place. We do not know what the future holds but thank you for your continued support of the American Cancer Society. Our fight continues.
