It’s apple season! 🍎 Some friends came over to help pick from our trees and press fresh cider, an annual tradition here at the farm 😋

We at Haley Farm (including Dora!) miss you and wish you the best during this time that affects us all, but has been devastating for many. It is certainly a difficult time in the hospitality industry. As a reminder - leisure travel within the state of Maryland is not permitted for any reason and out-of-state visitors (other than essential workers) must observe a 14-day quarantine period upon arriving. Be well everyone!

For those of you wondering why we woke up to lots of snow today in Garrett County and you didn't, look no further than the elevation change shown beautifully in the top photo. Love this share by the always-informative Deep Creek Times

3-D printed topographic/elevation maps.

Peter Forister (@forecaster25 on Twitter) made these. He is a grad student in Geography and Meteorology at Virginia Tech. I’d give him an A!

This puts it in perspective!

Maryland is a small state with BIG personality.
Average winter snow:
McHenry = 104”
Baltimore = 21”
Ocean City = 12”

(Top= Maryland and Delaware, Bottom = WV, VA, MD, DE)

In preparation for our health retreat coming up next weekend (August 9-11) I’m trying a fairly restrictive eating plan to see how easy it is to follow.
It’s based on the Whole 30 plan. So no sugar, flour, grains, rice, legumes, dairy or alcohol. Yes I know that sounds really tough. I’ve cut out flour and sugar before but never all these other things that I usually thought of as healthy.
It’s only been 2 days but so far it’s been fairly easy thank goodness. The photo below was what I had for breakfast. I like crunch in my food but I can get it from nuts (not peanuts) and raw veggies.
I also combine this with intermittent fasting which has enormous health benefits. I hope that Haley and I can inspire you to get your own health on the right track. Sometimes you just need a reboot. Call us.

I know so many of you are in for a swelteringly hot weekend. Remember to stay hydrated. It’s a little hotter than usual here too - in the 80s as opposed to the 70s. When we first moved here in 1993 air conditioning was needed maybe three or four days a year. Today it might be 10 or 20 days a year. But still that’s not bad compared to the rest of the country.
Before the invention of air conditioning people that had money would summer in the hill posts like Deep Creek. Henry Ford camped here and one of the Presidents vacationed here too.

So stay well during this heat wave and maybe check out Haley Farm and the Deep Creek Lake area.

We have the Agriculture Fair starting on August 27. They have the usual rides and cute animals and funnel cakes. It really is a part of old time Americana and worth checking out. Tuesday’s are senior day when seniors can get in for free.

And don’t forget if it’s a reset button that you are needing for your health then do attend one of our popular Wellness Retreats. The next one is August 9-11. We restrict them to 8 persons so that you can get personalized care.

Here’s a picture of a rainbow over the farm I took a couple of days ago.

Happy Earth Day
Just a shout out for earth day. I saw a TED talk last week on how we were going to reach Mars by the year 2027 and maybe have to live there if we destroy our planet. I really hope we don’t have to leave our beautiful earth for the red planet. I love earth, especially the seasons here - Spring and Autumn can’t compare to Mars’ seasons. Let’s all do something to preserve earth for future generations.

Here’s two plants you should probably have in your home. One is the Aloe plant. It’s succulent leaves are soothing for burns. And the other is the mother in law plant or snake plant. It takes in carbon dioxide at night and puts out oxygen.

Did you know yesterday (Tuesday January 22) was National hot sauce day. How could I, the Queen of hot food, have missed that? Never mind I will make up for it today.

I totally love cayenne pepper. It has so many benefits. It can help boost metabolism, help lower blood pressure and improve digestion. I usually add cayenne pepper to food but also like to add 1/4 teaspoon to my lemon drink.

Just squeeze the juice of a lemon and add 1 cup water, a pinch of Celtic salt and cayenne pepper to taste. Then you can flush the lemon rind down the disposal to make that smell sweet. Sometimes I will even zest the lemon beforehand and then squeeze the juice and crush the remains in the disposal (triple duty!).

Another of my favorite ways to get hot sauce is with Siracha. Or you can add spicy salsa to your morning omelette.

Whatever way you like to spice it up is fine and it’s even good for you.

Did you know today is National Popcorn day. Why not celebrate by making a delicious bowl of popcorn. I use organic blue popcorn to start with. This recipe is almost foolproof and just yummy.

Put 6 kernels of corn in pan with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
Cover until the 6 kernels have popped. Add 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels and let them mingle with the coconut oil for 30 seconds (no heat)
Turn the heat back on and let the kernels pop covered until you don’t hear any more popping.
Pour into bowl. Add Celtic salt or sea salt to taste and 2 tablespoons of Nutritional yeast. This gives it a delicious savory flavor. I also add cayenne to make it spicy but you don’t need to. Try it instead of the microwave popcorn 🍿 in honor of National Popcorn day.

Bayer Needs More Than an Aspirin to Cure its Monsanto-Sized Headache

Now that winter is almost upon us, most people have stopped using pesticides such as Roundup to kill weeds. But come spring, some of you may be thinking of using Roundup again.

Please read the following article before you make that decision. Hopefully it will change your mind. Let’s protect our earth, so that our children and our children’s children have a safe place to live.

Bayer is facing a cascade of new Roundup cases and a possible rash of shareholder lawsuits by its own investors alleging that Bayer failed to disclose its true liabilities

It has rained so much this year that the leaves didn’t change into their beautiful autumn hues. In fact, they are still green for the most part.

Not only that, we even had a light snowfall yesterday morning! We do usually get one snowfall by Halloween, but this is early, even for Garrett county.

Here are some pretty autumn pictures to remind you that all is still good with the world. Have a great week!

Our 2nd Annual Apple Cider Party! cancelled due to bad weather!

It’s not even November, but a cold front is moving in with temperatures below freezing at night. And on Sunday, the day of our cider party, they are calling for snow!

I really don’t want people stuck on my driveway or freezing. So please accept my apologies, and we will try again next year, but maybe we can hold it in September, before there is any chance of snow.

This past Sunday was the 15th Annual Aurora Barn dance held in Aurora, West Virginia. It’s so much fun and you get to do square dancing with a live band!

It’s also such a great cause - the entrance fee of $15 includes food, drinks and dessert - and all the money goes to support local artists (writers, painters, etc).

Also, we are having our 2nd Annual Apple Cider Party! here at Haley Farm.

I’ve hired a live band to play “The Trusted Few,” so bring your dancing shoes.

We will also be making fresh apple cider the old fashioned way, and if you want to take the pulp back to make apple cider vinegar at home, you are most welcome to it.

It’s also pot luck party so bring a dish to share. There is no entrance fee for this event. Hope you can make it!

I love trying out new fermented foods to feed my microbiome. One of these is kombucha.
I looked at what was available in the stores, and it’s really quite expensive to buy (about $2 or more for one serving).

So of course, I had to try and make it myself. I got a book on how to make it. I was supposed to order the scoby (or starter) but decided I would try it with some kombucha that Haley had purchased before.

Well, it’s been about 2 months since I began the project and believe it or not, I have my own scoby that got produced in the process! The kombucha is tart and palatable, but needs something else to make it taste better. I’ll have to experiment with adding ginger and lemon. But I’m so happy that it had a little baby scoby.

I hope my little adventure has inspired you to experiment with making your own fermented foods. I love making Kanji and kimchi and cooking for my gut health.

If you have a group of friends that want to explore making fermented foods, I’ll be happy to hold a class. Just call 301.387.2471. What a great Christmas gift!
