Pacoima Singers 9/11 Tribute

20 years ago, the Pacoima Singers recorded a song as a tribute to 9/11. We sold the CD and raised over $3000 for the 9/11 Red Cross Relief Fund.

We decided to once again perform this special song for the 20th Anniversary this week. It was filmed by KLCS and presented to the School Board today.

Enjoy!

Into The Fire SD 480p

This is the Pacoima Singers original tribute to 9/11. It comes from our 2003 show, NY, NY. When the Twin Towers fell, they damaged all of the buildings around them. One of them was a church build in the 1700s. The city immediately put a fence around the church, and slowly people from all over the world hung tributes on the fence.

Melodie and I visited NY and Ground Zero a couple months after the event and we filmed the original tributes. Using Bruce Sprinsteen's song told from the perspective of a fireman's widow, we ended our first act with this tribute.

May their strength give us strength.
May their faith give us faith.
May their hope give us hope.
May their love bring us love.

THE PACOIMA SINGERS 2021 SHOW IS DROPPING NOW:

SCENES FROM A COVID-19 MUSIC PROGRAM

When my students returned to in-person instruction late April, I was determined to give my kids an opportunity to perform at least once this year—especially my 8th graders who lost their show last year and their two performance trips.

12 of my 33 Singers received parent permission to participate in after-school, socially-distanced rehearsals. Those that could not attend had the opportunity to film speaking parts which were then edited into the show.

Four weeks later, we performed and filmed our show for an online presentation. Beautifully edited by our Film Department, we present you with the link below. Please enjoy and share.

And mark your calendars for May 12 and 13, 2022, for our IN-PERSON show next year, LET THE SUNSHINE IN!

One Small Flame: A Channukah Song

In honor of Hanukkah--the Pacoima Singers are the featured performers with Cantor Wally on his song, One Small Flame.

Some history--we were headed into the recording studio to record this song on September 13, 2001. As the result of 9/11, Cantor Wally gave me permission to rewrite the verse lyrics to make the song about 9/11 and the Statue of Liberty shining that evening through the smoke and ash. We recorded it, performed it on CNN, made a CD and collected over $3000 for the Red Cross 9/11 Fund.

A few months later, we went back into the studio and recorded the original Hanukkah version. Here it is.

Happy Hanukkah all!

Kent State May 4 Tribute

THIS IS THE PACOIMA SINGERS TRIBUTE TO THE KENT STATE SHOOTINGS, ON MAY 4, 1970, 50 YEARS AGO MONDAY.

Just days after President Nixon announced that we were going to invade Cambodia--a neutral country in the VietNam War--protests occurred at virtually every university in America. At Kent State, a small university outside of Cleveland, the governor called out the National Guard. The soldiers assigned were young, and when a bottle broke, they paniced, and began to shoot live rounds into the crowd. Four students--none of whom were part of the protest--were killed. The picture of a girl screaming over the body of her friend became one of the most recognizable photos of the VietNam War era. After the shootings, public opinion shifted dramatically against the war.

This period of American history was an example of the role that young people can have in shaping society. The War came to an end in large part because of the actions of the young people at that time. Our power, our voice, changed society. Now we need today's youth to rise up and vote in November and change our society today.

In my 27 years directing the Pacoima Singers, our 60's show has always been my favorite, not only for the music, but as a teaching lesson for my students and our audience.
Here is our tribute to Kent State--the 50th anniversary of which is this Monday.

Please share and teach our kids about it.

Got to stay positive and look towards the future.

Need help from all of you who are cleaning out your garage over the next month for the first time in years.

And this message is specifically for those of you who used to collect vinyl records. (If you have a puzzled look on your face, move on to the next message).

Either this year or next year, my Pacoima Singers will finally put on their show THE LAST REAL RECORD STORE ON EARTH. We need vinyl records for props!! So--if you come across some in your cleaning, and are considering throwing them out, please donate them to us! If you find them and think you'll someday play them--please donate them (c'mon, you know you're never going to play them).

You can wait until this quarantine is over to donate them, or if you really want them gone, message me and you can put them out on your driveway and I'll pick them up keeping an acceptable social distance.

Thanks!! And let's all remember, we're going to get back to some semblence of normal eventually!! Plan for it.

This is Me

HI all! I and my students need your help. For 22 years I have been taking my Pacoima Singers on tour around the country and Canada to perform. This spring we are going to represent California at the America Sings! Festival in Nashville, Tennesee. However, for the first time, we are in serious danger of not making it.

The trip costs over $1500 per student. Usually for a school overnight trip, the student's parents have to pay the entire amount or the student cannot attend. My policy has always been either everyone goes, or no one goes. IN 22 YEARS I HAVE NEVER LEFT A CHILD BEHIND BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS CANNOT AFFORD THE TRIP! Parents donate as much as they can, and we fundraise the rest. Some pay the entire amount--some parents are day laborers and pay a minimal amount. Either way, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many students who have never been on an airplane and will never leave the state in their lifetime.

Unfortunately, neither the school nor the district gives us any money for the trip or opperational costs. The vast majority of our fundraising comes from sponsorships. And that's where you come in.

The Trump tax cut has killed us. Because of inflated tax bills in California, our sponsorships dropped last year from $18,000 to less than $7000. If we don't raise that number to over $10,000 this year, the trip may not happen. To date we have only $2000 for the year.

For only $50 (or more), you can be a sponsor for these incredibly talented public school children. As a sponsor, you get your name on our special trip shirt, and two tickets to our annual spring show, The Last Real Record Store on Earth.

Checks can be sent to my attention to Pacoima Middle School, 9919 Laurel Canyon Blvd, Pacoima 91331. You can also use a credit card. (Message me, and I'll send you a Credit Card form).

Please become a sponsor and help these amazing middle school students achieve this once in a lifetime opportunity. It's so rare we get to provide students with educational experiences that aren't tied to test scores!!

If you want to see the level of talent of these kids--take a look at this video.

Warmly,

Scott

Hello 12, Hello 13

Below is video #2 of our last show--A Chorus Room--uploaded onto YouTube. I'm going to post them this week to share. Two things to consider as you watch these incredible kids:

1--Mark your calendar for our show this year: THE LAST REAL RECORD STORE ON EARTH, May 14 & 15.

2--More important--become a sponsor for these amazing kids for their performing trip to Nashville, Tennessee, in March, to represent California at the AMERICA SINGS! FESTIVAL.

We need to raise about $50,000 for everyone to participate. We get ZERO money from the school or district. And our policy is EVERYONE goes or no one goes. In 22 years of doing these trips, I have NEVER left a child behind for financial reasons.

For a tax-deductable donation or $50 (or more) you can be a sponsor--you get your name on our souvenir trip shirt and two tickets to our annual show. You can send checks to Pacoima Singers, 9919 Laurel Canyon Blvd, Pacoima 91331. OR you can request a credit card form and I'll send it to you. (Won't do online anymore--we lose 12% and last year the money "disappeared".)

Enjoy the video and please sponsor these amazing kids!

Seize the Day--from Newsies

The second video.

We just received the finished video of our show last year: Broadway!: 25 Years of Singing This Stuff. Over the next week I'm going to post some special selections from the show, for those who didn't get a chance to see it--it was the best show we've ever had.

Please mark your calendar for our show this year: A CHORUS ROOM, May 2 & 3, 2019. Our show is an adaptation of A Chorus Line, but instead of a show about the lives of dancers auditioning for a Broadway show, this show is about the lives of middle school students auditioning for a Musical Theatre class. It’s a lot of fun, and a very moving and emotional show.

Enjoy! Please remember, these kids are only 7th and 8th graders--12, 13, and 14 years old.
