Happy #MissionMonday!

Many of you probably already know Eddie as he is very active in the community, always helping others. So much so, that Eddie was is a past American Diabetes Association "Volunteer of the Year".

We are excited to welcome Eddie Uribe back for LA Tour de Cure 2019 along with his team: Team Ole! (Team One Legged Eddie)!

Eddie is a multi-year Champion Fundraiser, a Red Rider, has served on the volunteer planning committee for Tour de Cure and leads one of the largest Walk teams! Eddie is always ready and willing to roll up his sleeves and get things done. We know we can rely on him to deliver the goods.

In Eddie's words-- "I went to a walk in Pasadena in 2004, after my below the knee amputation. I wanted to be a force to fight for a cure.

After that walk, I was recruited to the Santa Clarita Step Out Walk as a Volunteer Community Member. With my knowledge of the food industry, I was able to use my connections to get restaurants to donate food and drinks for our Walk, and have been doing it ever since.

I also have my own Team "Team Ole" and every year our team has raised between $1500- $3900.

I continue my fight for a cure, for myself and the millions of other diabetics in the world, so that future generations to come won't have to suffer."

Eddie, you are one amazing, giving person that we are so fortunate to call our friend. Thank you for all you do!

Happy #MissionMonday!

If you’ve been to LA Tour de Cure, you’ve probably met Julyne Herrera. She’s the captain of Team Aloha (one of our TOP friends & family teams), and a many-year champion fundraiser who recently had some incredibly exciting experiences reconnecting with friends and family from her past through the Facebook Fundraising tool. She has already raised $2,905 towards LA Tour de Cure!

What is Julyne’s Mission?

“This journey to find a cure for diabetes is personal to me. When my mother passed away from this disease, I still didn’t have a clue the impact diabetes had on her life. I do now because I received my Type 2 diagnosis in January 2012. Diabetes sucks! It is an unwanted companion whether I’m riding a bike, participating in a 5K or going out with my family and friends. If you want to sustain your quality of life, constant management of your diabetes is required. Think about it. That’s a lot of work. The alternative however, is worse. Diabetes will kill you! There’s no sugar coating this (pun intended). We need to find a cure NOW.”

#ConnectedForLife

On local, state, and national levels we are honored to stand alongside YOU, and to advocate for YOU.

Yesterday Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44), ADA Advocate Niketa Calame-Harris, and Southern California Executive Director Jane Sands stood together to fight the astronomic high prices of insulin and other prescription drugs.

Wherever you are, we are with you.
However you are affected by diabetes, we stand to support you!

On Thursday, May 30th at 10:00 am, Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) hosted a press conference to discuss the rising costs of prescription drugs, like insulin, and the impact on her constituents and Los Angeles residents.

Rep. Barragán will release a Congressional report on the high prices of diabetes medications and its impact on patients—particularly seniors on Medicare and the uninsured in California’s 44th district.

Additionally, the Congresswoman discussed the recent House passage of H.R 987, the Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act, a major piece of legislation that addresses two top concerns of the American people – lowering prescription drug prices and strengthening health care protections.

Happy #MissionMonday!

On Tuesday May 21st, we gather for the "Riverside Father of the Year Awards" and we have the honor of celebrating the strength of Rowen Fua!

Rowen is why we stay dedicated to our mission, and why we stay #ConnectedForLife
----------
A message from Rowen’s parents:

Rowen was diagnosed in July 2018 with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14 months in diabetic ketoacidosis. As parents, we were terrified and absolutely heartbroken. No one wants to see their child on oxygen with IV’s attached. Coming home was like bringing a newborn home. Everything is new and overwhelming, not only for us, but for him as well. Between timing meals and giving injections, it was a difficult time for our entire family.

We are so thankful he is alive to see his second birthday. He has come so far since that day. You would never know he has type 1 diabetes. He loves to swim, run and of course be a sassy toddler. He will always have challenges to overcome but we will always work hard to make sure he feels like a normal toddler. Thanks to the ADA, we have the tools to do just that!

Happy #MissionMonday!

Today we meet Anthony Padilla. Anthony shares why he joined the fight to stop diabetes, and how he learned about the impact the disease has on so many people in our lives.

Thank you for being part of this mission, Anthony!

-------------------------------

"Hello Everyone,

My name is Anthony Padilla and I’d like to share my journey to this point [with the Tour de Cure]. It started in July of 2018. I had been looking for a way to exercise that was easy on the knees and a lot of fun, so I got my first road bike. July 21st was the life changing moment.

Later in the next couple months I noticed a poster in front of the elevator announcing our company’s involvement with the Tour de Cure. I looked up what it was and was instantly on-board to participate.

All this together made me realize how little I knew about the disease that effects some of my closest relatives. Some of the people I enjoy spending a lot of my time with are affected by diabetes. So, they are the reason I train for months to raise awareness.

The first picture is of my grandparents. I love these two people more than words can describe and I cherish every moment I spend with them. In the second picture are my two uncles, which also have diabetes.

I don’t know what I would do if their lives were to be impacted by improper care, so it feels really good to be able to help spread awareness. Thank you for taking the time to read about my story and I hope together we can all make a difference!"
