The Laughing Man Alphabet – Vera Ivanova

Check out Brightwork members Sara Andon, flute and Aron Kallay, piano, perform Vera Ivanova's Laughing Man Alphabet from the Hear Now Festival in Los Angeles!
From Sara Andon's post about the performance with program notes on the piece.
HEAR NOW - A FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS - LOS ANGELES - Such a joy to be a part of this Los Angeles contemporary music festival performing this amazing piece "THE LAUGHING MAN ALPHABET" by phenomenal composer Vera Ivanova, for Flute, Alto Flute, Piccolo and Piano, with extraordinary pianist, Aron Kallay.
What a trip transporting into this incredible world of color and imagination based on themes of composer Helmut Lachenmann.
PROGRAM NOTES by composer VERA IVANOVA: "The title of the piece ("The Laughing Man Alphabet") refers to the last name of the contemporary German composer Helmut Lachenmann (b. 1935), whose last name, loosely translated to English, means "laughing man." The reference will not limit itself only to the title of the piece; my musical idea is to incorporate Helmut Lachenmannan's suite for piano " Ein Kinderspiel" (Child's play," a suite of seven little pieces composed in 1980) as a framework in my own composition, shaping the form as seven variations on Lachenmann's seven little piano pieces. A particular emphasis (in terms of musical references) is given to the first piece from the suite, "Hanschen Klein" (translated to English as "Little Hans"), because of its importance and placement (as an opening movement) in Lachenmann's suite.
"Hanschen Klein" is the title of a poem by German author and public school teacher Franz Wiedemann (1821-1882). It is a story about a little boy who was gone for seven years and when he comes back, he is all grown up and changed so much that only his mother recognizes and welcomes him back. The importance of this poem is significant in German culture: the text was set to a tune (the source of the tune is debated) and became a popular children's song, which was quoted at the opening of the iconic movie about the World War II, " Cross of Iron" (1977). It also seems that the reference in the Wiedemann's poem to seven years of wandering might have impacted the overall form of the Lachenmann's suite, written in seven movements, and that's why not only the titles of Lachenmann's short seven pieces are quoted in subtitles of my seven variations, but also lines from Wiedemann's poem, tracking the path a prodigal son.
The goal of incorporating Lachenmann's "Ein Kinderspiel" into my own composition is not only to reference his piano suite, but also to re-imagine the seven years of "joy and tears" of the prodigal son's journey through my seven variations for flute and piano."
Enjoy!

CD Review: Voices of the Pearl, Vol. 3

From a CD review by Sequenza 21 written by Paul Muller on Chinary Ung's "Still Life After Death" in Anne Harley's recent album Voices of the Pearl: "The instrumental accompaniment (to Stacey Fraser, soprano and James Hayden, bass-baritone) by Brightwork newmusic is extraordinary, with vivid coloration and strong dynamics...Still Life After Death is a dramatic portrait of the emotions experienced at the end of life and the timeless reassurance of prayer."
Also check out the "rapid, spiky passages, masterfully played by Brian Walsh" in "My Spirit is Chanting" by Yii Kah Hoe.

The next #BWHSCI faculty feature is cellist Maggie Parkins! She "is equally at home performing chamber music, orchestral music and the avant-garde, and has concertized throughout the Americas and Europe.
Her interest in music outside the classical tradition has led her to perform with the Jazz Passengers, the Anthony Braxton Tri Centric Ensemble, Caetano Veloso, Bjork, percussonist Alex Cline and Zeena Parkins' The Phantom Orchard Orchestra. As an orchestral performer, Parkins has performed under the batons of Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, Simon Rattle, Oliver Knussen, and Andre Previn." Awesome!

The students of the #BWHSCI will work closely with composer #Ninashekhar and Brightwork ensemble. But who are we? Brightwork is a classical new music sextet based in Los Angeles, CA; a versatile group of world-class musicians.

The first member feature of Brightwork newmusic is executive director and pianist Aron Kallay!
From his bio because it is so great. Described as a “modern renaissance man,” (Over the Mountain Journal) Grammy® nominated pianist Aron Kallay‘s playing has been called “exquisite…every sound sounded considered, alive, worthy of our wonder” (LA Times). “Perhaps Los Angeles’ most versatile keyboardist,” (LaOpus) Aron has been praised as possessing “that special blend of intellect, emotion, and overt physicality that makes even the thorniest scores simply leap from the page into the listeners laps.” (KPFK) Aron’s performances often integrate technology, video, and alternate tunings; Fanfare magazine described him as “a multiple threat: a great pianist, brainy tech wizard, and visionary promoter of a new musical practice.”

Aron has performed throughout the United States and abroad and is a fixture on the Los Angeles new-music scene. He is the co-founder and board president of People Inside Electronics (PIE), a concert series dedicated to classical electroacoustic music, the managing director of MicroFest, Los Angeles’ annual festival of microtonal music, and the co-directer of the underground new-music concert series [email protected] Space. He is also the co-director of MicroFest Records, whose first release, John Cage: The Ten Thousand Things, was nominated for a Grammy® award for Best Chamber Music Performance. Aron has recorded on MicroFest, Cold Blue, Delos, and Populist records. In addition to his solo work, Aron is a member of the Varied Trio and the Ray Kallay duo and is the founder of this ensemble, the Pierrot + percussion sextet Brightwork newmusic! (Lots of fantastic videos online of their performances) How incredible!

Yay!
this all looks great, but considering that it's "Monk" space and LA and it's about music, a few performers of African descent might be, you know, appropriate, just for appearances sake...
