Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there, especially those who work hard to support the dreams and ambitions of the dear students of JPA!

Today we also celebrate our Director Mina Perry, whose maternal care, dedication, and support of each and every student is inspiring and admirable.

At this challenging time of crisis, we decided to cancel JPA 2020. We know this decision makes all of us very sad; however, we will return in the summer of 2021 with the biggest excitement ever, and we shall look forward to seeing you there.
To those who have already registered: the application fee will be refunded. You will be hearing from us shortly.

In the meantime, let's please focus on staying safe and healthy. Isolate (physically) yourself as much as you can. Be the honorable artist who cares about and influences others. Music is always with us, and we are all connected spiritually.

We are extremely excited to have James Anagnoson on board this summer at JPA 2020! He is an artist and an educator and a human being who is ONE OF A KIND!

James Anagnoson, Dean of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, is one of Canada's best-known pianists and pedagogues. He has been on the piano faculty of the GGS since its formation in 1987, and has also taught at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario.

Mr. Anagnoson’s students have won prizes in International Competitions such as the Maria Canals, the International Franz Liszt, the Gina Bachauer, and the Dublin International competitions, and repeatedly are prizewinners in Canada’s National Competitions such as the Canadian Music Competition and the Toronto Symphony Competition. He has given master classes in various parts of Europe, North America, and Asia, and he has been a juror for competitions such as the Dublin International Piano Competition, the Hong Kong International Piano Competition, the Canadian Chopin Competition, the Prix d'Europe, the International e-Competition, the Toronto International Piano Competition, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Competition.

In 1976, James Anagnoson began performing with Canadian pianist Leslie Kinton. The duo Anagnoson & Kinton received unanimous acclaim from both audiences and critics, and have performed in more than 1000 concerts around the world. The duo has been heard in concerto appearances with Canada's leading orchestras, and they have made 10 CDs of works for two pianos, two pianos and orchestra and piano four hands, which are played regularly across Canada, the United States and Europe. Anagnoson & Kinton have also performed for the BBC, Czech National Radio, Hong Kong Radio, Hilversum Radio in Holland, and radio Suisse Romande. Recognized as one of the world’s finest piano duos, Anagnoson & Kinton were named Honorary Fellows of The Royal Conservatory of Music in 2019.

James Anagnoson has been heard nationally on the CBC radio as a guest host on both The Arts Tonight and This Is My Music, and as a piano commentator for both the Esther Honens International Piano Competition and the CBC Young Performer's Competition.

Mr. Anagnoson received his Master's degree from The Juilliard School, and his Bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music, which he attended on scholarship.

John Perry Academy International Piano Festival - Day 6

Arizona State University's Baruch Meir gave an engaging and terrific lecture! From his origins of Israel (one of his earliest teachers was a Holocaust survivor at Auschwitz), to his studies in London, and in Arizona, Meir's fascinating life journey is exemplified by his artistry and musicianship. He emphasised personality and a singing tone when playing the piano. He also told us stories of his time with the legendary Martha Argerich.

Alan Chow was incredibly inspiring during our Lecture Series, sharing stories about growing up with his twin brother doing all the same piano competitions, then going on to go to all the same colleges and studying with the same teachers. He shared with us his desire to teach since he was a kid, and it was really wonderful to hear him share his story.

Introducing faculty of the 2019 John Perry Academy International Piano Festival:
Dmitry Rachmanov, California State University Northridge

Pianist Dmitry Rachmanov has garnered much acclaim for his passionate performances, refined musicianship and brilliant pianism. Hailed as an "indisputable musician" by the Brussels' Le Soir and "suave and gifted pianist' by the New York Times, Rachmanov has been heard at venues such as New York's Carnegie Hall, Washington DC's Kennedy Center, London's Barbican and South Bank Centres, and Beijing Concert Hall, and his tours brought him to Canada, Mexico, Europe, Russia, Turkey and the Far East. He has recorded for Naxos, Navona, Omniclassic, Master Musicians and Vista Vera labels, and collaborated as a soloist with Manhattan Philharmonia, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Orlando Symphony, London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, Ukraine National Symphony, National Orchestra of Porto, Portugal, among others.

Dr. Dmitry Rachmanov is Professor of Piano at CSU Northridge, where he serves as Chair of Keyboard Studies. A sought-after master class clinician and lecturer, Dr. Rachmanov has served on the faculties of Manhattan School of Music and Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and has appeared as a guest artist/teacher at The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Indiana University at Bloomington, University of Michigan, Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Beijing Central, Shanghai and Harbin Conservatories as well as East China Normal and Shanghai Normal Universities, among others. Dr. Rachmanov has been a frequent competition adjudicator in the US and abroad.

Dmitry Rachmanov is a Steinway Artist.

Announcing faculty of the 2019 John Perry Academy International Piano Festival:
Jean-David Coen, Willamette University

Pianist Jean-David Coen, artist in Residence at Willamette University in Oregon has studied and holds degrees from the Paris Conservatory, Juilliard, and Yale; finishing with his Doctorate from the University of Southern California. He worked with significant masters representing each of the 3 great and most essential pianistic traditions, the German, Russian, and French "schools" of interpretation and technique. These great artists included Adele Marcus, Jeanne Marie Darre, Claude Frank, Sacha Gorodnitzki, and John Perry.

Jean-David began concertizing with orchestra when he was 9, and by 17 had performed both Tchaikovsky and Brahms first piano concertos. He has played around the world with orchestras like the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Tanglewood and the Oregon Bach Festival. Completing a circle started with his performance of the Chopin G minor ballade at the age of 12 in the famous tent at the Aspen Music Festival and School, Coen became a member of the Piano and Chamber Music faculty there; his tenure lasting 24 years. His 2008 performance of the Diabelli variations concluded the festival's presentation of the entire cycle of Beethoven's piano works.

Announcing faculty of the 2019 John Perry Academy International Piano Festival:
Sasha Starcevich, Artistic Director of MusicFest Perugia

Pianist Sasha Starcevich is currently enjoying a very rewarding career as an international performer and teacher. Since receiving his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Yale University in May of 2003, he has continued to thrill audiences here in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Starcevich has given recitals at New York’s Carnegie Recital Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, Windsor Castle, and in London’s Wigmore Hall. His solo recital there in May of 2002 was met with much critical acclaim, and a review in the Musical Opinion wrote: “The repertoire was brilliantly conceived; a thoroughly enjoyable recital at every level”. Most recently he has given solo recitals and concerto appearances in Europe, and played a four hand piano recital with Peter Frankl. Upcoming concerts for the 2013-2014 season include those in Italy, England and in the United States.

As a soloist he has performed with orchestras throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, China and also toured Russia with the Samara Philharmonic Orchestra, and has performed at several international festivals such as the Henley Festival in England and Holder’s Season in Barbados. Starcevich has recorded for CBS Television in the United States and has released two CD’s under the Britstar label in the United States and the Jacques Samuel Label in London, England. His principal teachers have included Ilana Vered, Peter Frankl, Jane Allen, Donna Fishwick and Boris Berman.

Yoshikazu Nagai, San Francisco Conservatory

Called “Pianistic fire” by the Charleston Post, Japanese pianist Yoshikazu Nagai has impressed audiences and critics alike with his fresh interpretations and dramatic presentation style across North America and abroad. Equally at home as both soloist and chamber musician, Mr. Nagai has performed internationally in such venues as the National Recital Hall in Taiwan, Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall in Canada, Castello de Donna Fugato in Italy, the John F. Kennedy Center, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall in New York and with orchestras across the country. His extensive recital schedules in recent seasons have included acclaimed recitals in Taipei, Hong Kong, Italy, San Francisco, San Antonio, New York, Fort Worth, Seattle, Cleveland, Houston, Santa Barbara, Washington D.C., and New Orleans among others.

Yoshikazu Nagai was born in Landstuhl, Germany, and grew up in Kent, Washington where he began his musical studies at the age of eight. Since that time, Mr. Nagai has been a laureate of several international competitions, most recently capturing first prize at the 2002 Washington International Piano Competition and the Liszt Special Mention Prize in the 2002 IBLA Grand Prize International Piano Competition held in Italy. Mr. Nagai studied with John Perry at Rice University and received his Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he was awarded the Malvina Podis Prize in Piano upon graduation with Paul Schenly. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from the University of Puget Sound where he studied with Duane Hulbert. Other teachers include Jerome Lowenthal, and Sergei Babayan.
