Powhatan GT

Powhatan GT Powhatan Gaming Tournament is an annual community fundraiser hosted by the Powhatan Internet Cooperative. Powhatan Gaming Tournament is an annual event started in 2017 by the Powhatan Internet Cooperative as a community fundraiser.

PC gamers from all over Central Virginia are invited to take place in a team-based PC game competition for prizes, and bragging rights as to who is the best team in Central VA! The 2017 GT-I event will raise money for the Co-op's Phase II Study (software and hardware) which is designing a 100% fiber optic network for Powhatan County homes and businesses. Future GT events will raise money for charities and community initiatives voted on by the Co-op's membership, and the community as a whole.

Hey everyone! We can’t wait for this evening! We’re busy right now running around getting everything together to descend on Powhatan Elementary and do some massive gaming! Just a reminder - here is a map of the location (same as the original event date). Please note parking areas in green, and ingress/egress points marked with green arrows. The front bus loop is a fire zone, so please do not park there or drop off in that zone. The other side of the building (faculty parking) is the designated drop off zone. Once on foot, head to registration located in the front hall near the office. We’ll sign you in (just for head count) and you can proceed into the event area. No registration fees. We are asking for donations/contributions towards the facility rental, and towards our feasibility study goals. If you have any questions, please find one of our event staff wearing black shirts with the Powhatan Internet Cooperative logo on the front.

Tonight is a family fun event. There will be something for all ages. So come out and enjoy! Doors open at 5 for setup, and everything will kickoff around 6 for gaming, vendors, etc.

Thank you for your support!

So there's a new Facebook cover video on our page... 😁

Come visit our Kickstart Fiber Campaign page at https://powhatancoop.org/kickstart/

We know there will be a lot of questions - so please feel free to post those questions here, or ask them during the live broadcast tonight, and we will get those answered to clear up any details or misconceptions and give you complete transparency into how we're going to accomplish fiber-to-the-home in our community.

Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to seeing you online tonight at 7pm.

Hey guys, quick update from tonight's Board Meeting. We're not doing the live broadcast tonight. We have a quick change to make on the kickstarter page, and we'll be ready to go live with that tomorrow evening.

Tonight we discussed various meetings that I've been attending over the past few weeks. Those meetings were with county officials, developers, contractors, and residents - all trying to figure out how to pay for a fiber network. We also discussed the four projects we have right now, and the potential financing options we have with those.

Based on our meeting tonight (and decision with the kickstarter change) I'm updating my speaking notes for the broadcast, and I will see you on here tomorrow evening at 7pm if you're available to join us. I'll also have a broadcast schedule available tomorrow evening which will be 2-3 evenings each week for the next few weeks. My plan is to make a brief intro of the kickstarter (5-10 minutes), then take questions from viewers. So if you can't make tomorrow evening, watch for the follow-up posting about the broadcast schedule so you can make plans to watch.

As always Powhatan, thank you for your support. We understand broadband is a serious issue in our community, and we're working diligently to solve it. Please be patient. Thanks!

Good morning friends, here's a quick update from our progress last week.

We're now working on four projects. We have a meeting today, and hopefully we'll have some answers by our board meeting (2/27) that we can share on our three fiber projects.

PROJECT ONE:
We can share our first project, which is building a Co-op headquarters and data center. Ideally located in the center of Powhatan, we desire to build a 60,000-square foot headquarters with a 12,000-square foot data center attached. And here's why:

1) Our fiber-to-the-premise (home, business, etc.) network has to start somewhere. The data center will serve as the origin for all fiber going out into our community. We'll also host our own servers for Co-op services like email, websites, etc.

2) This building will serve as the technology epicenter of Powhatan. Members will have 24/7 access, general public will have regular business hours access to most areas. The advantage is that while you wait for us to build our fiber network to your home (which could take up to 24-months after we achieve full funding), you have somewhere to go for unlimited access - lounge rooms will be available for Xbox parties!! We'll even have workspace areas for you work-from-home and mobile workers that need a quiet space with printing and phones.

3) There will be a small business center and business incubator. This area will facilitate the creation of 20 or more new tech (or any industry, not just IT) businesses every 24-months. The idea here is to take the risk and financial fear out of starting a business, and putting all the resources at your fingertips (especially IT resources), so you're free to build and grow a business idea into something amazing (and beneficial to Powhatan).

4) Abut 10% of the data center space will be used for the fiber network, which leaves about 90% room for growth with additional data cabinets. This gives us 140+ data cabinets for members to rent who need a co-location space for servers and other network equipment.

5) There are about 20 homes and businesses in the vicinity of the proposed site/building which could be immediately serviced with fiber.

We'll share a preliminary floor plan design at the Feb. 27 Board Meeting. Funding for this facility is included in our kickstarter campaign.

The GT website is back online! We had some upgrade issues that forced a renovation... So check it out when you get a chance: www.powhatangt.com.

Lastly, we've got some details to still iron out on the kickstarter. So look for that page to launch on Feb 27 during our monthly meeting. We'll also plan to broadcast live that evening to discuss the kickstarter! So the first live broadcast to discuss the kickstarter will be on 2/27 at 7:00pm.

Thanks for your support Powhatan!

PS. Please continue to share our broadband survey at https://www.powhatancoop.org/broadband-survey/

Our membership application is now available online at https://www.powhatancoop.org/ab…/membership/become-a-member/. It's quick and easy (and secure) to join - that $10 membership fee helps us with ongoing marketing and office expenses, and also gets deducted from your installation fee when we get ready to install our fiber network.

Hey guys, here's a quick update from our progress last week.

We have several projects in the works - nothing that can be publicly posted yet, but we'll get them up as soon as possible. Just a hint though...

We're working on some fiber projects to get service along a major route in central Powhatan that could service up to 500 homes with fiber broadband! Once we have enough information, we'll be ready to announce those areas and drop off door hangers to let you know how to sign up - if you're in the area...

We're also working on getting the GT website back online - look for that within the next few days, and we'll work hard to get April 20th locked down for our fundraiser event.

Lastly, look for the kickstarter broadcast schedule to come out in this coming weekend's update!

Thanks for your support Powhatan!

HELLO FRIENDS
This is your Co-op Weekend Update from February 4, 2018.

We're a little late in getting posted here because I wanted to get yesterday's notes typed up and posted to our website. We had a workshop yesterday to talk about our upcoming Kickstarter to fund the Co-op's fiber network. Those notes are located on our site at:

https://www.powhatancoop.org/about/agendas-minutes/workshop-02-04-18/

This past week has mainly focused on getting ready to launch the Kickstarter, as well as some immediate needs and opportunities for the Co-op. So please read the Notes page when you have time, and you'll be caught up on all of the discussion items.

We're looking forward to doing a live broadcast when we launch the Kickstarter. It'll be several 10-15 minute presentations about the campaign, then we'll have discussion for as long as people want to ask questions. We'll announce those live broadcasts well in advance so you can make plans to tune in for one.

Thanks!

Our January 28, 2018 Weekend Update!

HELLO FRIENDS
This is your Co-op Weekend Update for January 28, 2018.

I apologize for the delay in getting this weekend's update out - there was a personal illness and an ER trip involved, but everyone's ok now. I'll work to get the weekly and monthly newsletters out asap.

Here's a rundown of the goings-on this past week:

GT-I FUNDRAISER
We're working on new flyers and advertisement for the event. As well as a new website launch. Expect to see that by the end of the week.

PHASE UPDATES

PHASE I
Bylaws were ratified on 1/23; vote 3-0. The updated and approved version is available on our website at About > Bylaws.
Our 501(c)12 application is being submitted this week.

PHASE II
No new updates for the feasibility study.

PHASE III
No new updates for the Co-op building.

MEMBERSHIP
Our membership application is available on the website now, and we've made it incredibly easy and safe for you to join the Co-op. Visit our site, click on About > Membership > Apply Now. Membership is the easiest way to show your support, and helps the Co-op pay for marketing material, advertising, and other expenses as we move forward.

KICKSTARTER
We are almost ready to launch our Kickstarter Campaign to fund the Co-op. We're working on a few details to the page, and we'll be ready to advertise and answer any questions - expect a LIVE video from us when we launch.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Please welcome our two new Interim Board Members: Bryan Caudle and James Temple. Bryan and James are both passionate about improving our community, especially through Broadband, and will be representing Districts 1 and 5 until we hold our first election. Bryan has over 25 years of experience as an IT professional, and much of that specifically focuses on Internet access and data center. James is a veteran of the United States Air Force and a business owner, and believes in the power of technology to enable communities to reach their full potential. Their bios are featured now on the About > Board of Directors page at our website.

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at the Powhatan County Public Library in the Large Conference Room starting at 6:30PM. We hope to see you there! We'll have a meeting documents folder to share in the next week or two with an agenda, and any other pertinent documents.

Weekend update from the Co-op.

HELLO FRIENDS
This is your Co-op Weekend Update for January 20, 2018.

COMMUNICATION
There is now a Weekend Updates Newsletter subscription form on our website - it's located in the "widgets" bar, which is the right-hand column on our website, and it's present on every page. So if you'd like to receive this update via email (which will have pictures, etc., in the future) you may enter your email and click Submit. MailChimp will send you a confirmation email to confirm that you would like to subscribe.

GT-I FUNDRAISER
We've received several quotes for the event insurance. Those numbers range from $380-600 (all local providers). We'll be looking those quotes over at Tuesday's meeting to decide which to select and seek funding through sponsorships and contributions. After we have the insurance certificate we can re-submit the facilities use form to reserve the building.

PHASE UPDATES

PHASE I
Bylaws: Tuesday night's meeting will feature a final review of the Bylaws, at which time we will vote to ratify those Bylaws; making them official.
501(c)12: Our application is ready to submit with a ratified set of Bylaws.

PHASE II
No new updates for the feasibility study.

PHASE III
We're very excited to share a 3D outside view of the Co-op headquarters at the January 23 meeting. Super Structures General Contractors, Inc. has worked to provide us a preliminary rendering of the outside of the facility - there have already been changes since the printing of the images so realize nothing is set in stone yet... We'll have a list of features to be included in the floor design, and we'll share the floor plan once it's available.

KICKSTARTER
The necessary plugins are installed to our website to create and manage a kickstarter campaign on powhatancoop.org. We'll discuss the website purchases required to move forward at Tuesday's meeting.

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting is this Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at the Powhatan County Public Library in the Large Conference Room starting at 6PM. We hope to see you there! Here is the agenda:

GT-I UPDATE
Here's an update from the Co-op - pay attention to the second section titled GT-I FUNDRAISER UPDATE. The short version is we have a tentative make-up date! Pencil in Friday, April 20, on your calendar as the GT-I make-up date. We're working on funding now and coordinating with sponsors and vendors to lock that date down. We'll update you again next week on progress.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us here, or through the website at https://www.powhatangt.com. Updates will be coming to the website next week detailing the new event date.
Thanks for your patience! We can't wait to see you all at GT-I!

HELLO FRIENDS
Welcome to 2018! We had our first board meeting of the year last week, which was actually a make-up date from our meeting in December. There are a number of "moving pieces" going on right now, and so we are stepping up our commitment to you all to keep you informed about what we're working on currently. This is a long post, but we hope it's well worth the few minutes to read it.

GT-I FUNDRAISER UPDATE
Canceling our December 8 GT-I Fundraiser was heartbreaking for several reasons. First and foremost, our sponsors and members assisted us with nearly $2,000 in expenses that are completely unrecoverable/non-refundable from the closing of PCPS facilities. We absolutely do not fault PCPS for closing, as the weather truly did get bad that Friday evening. And we greatly appreciate our sponsors: CablesAndKits.com, Powhatan School of Dental Assisting, and Current Electric Inc. for their contributions in helping us get GT-I pulled together - much of which can be used for the make-up date and future GT events. Second, the countless hours spent by our volunteers preparing for that night, and our sponsors getting organized to come spend the evening with us.

The delay in getting a make-up date scheduled has been purely financial - it will cost us almost another $1,500 to schedule a make-up date. So we are working diligently to find additional sponsors that can assist us with the event insurance and advertising costs. BUT with that said, FRIDAY, APRIL 20 is our tentative make-up date. This date is not "written in stone" yet because we need the insurance before we can officially reserve the facility. So pencil in April 20th on your calendars. We'll get the new date posted on the Powhatan GT page, websites, post an event, and open registration sometime this coming week - more details in next week's update.

COMMUNICATION
We'll be doing a "Co-op Weekend Update" every weekend from now on as our commitment to better share everything going on with the Co-op. This is especially the case because there's a lot going on right now in the development of the Co-op. So expect a Saturday Facebook post, as well as we'll create a newsletter sign-up so you have the option to receive the weekly update as an email.

PHASE II UPDATE
Our goal for Phase II was to use the fundraiser to raise the funds needed for purchasing FiberPlanIt - a fiber planning software that would allow us to build a "virtual" fiber network throughout the county to calculate a near-exact (95-99% accurate) cost for our grant and loan applications which are due before May 1. Because of the event pushing back (tentatively) to April 20, that will not be enough time to raise the money, purchase the software, and conduct the study.

So we need to raise the $15,000 another way, or apply for the software funds through the May 1 grant program, but that will delay the Co-op's timeline by 12 months in applying for funding to build the actual network because we would have to wait until May 1, 2019, to apply for the network funding if we miss this May 1 (2018).

PHASE III POTENTIAL LAUNCH
Phase III is the construction of a Co-op Data Center. We need a location from which all the fiber in our network will start, and fan out throughout the county to provide everyone service. We have an opportunity to work with a family for the private sale of land in an ideal location for this Data Center. However, the Data Center (and the massive amount of Internet bandwidth we'll have there) also creates some very unique opportunities:

- a Co-op headquarters/meeting place
- a business co-working space and incubator to foster the creation of Powhatan tech (and non-tech) start-ups
- shared business space and resources like computer training labs, conference rooms, printing services, phones, faxing, etc.
- 24/7 access by members to use co-working and lounge areas for Internet access while we're still building out our fiber network
- potential education/program opportunities with other organizations in the area

We are working with a local General Contractor to design a turn-key facility, and we're very excited to share this with you in our upcoming updates - we hope to present this at our January 23 Board Meeting. Naturally the cost of this facility and its ongoing maintenance will require recurring funding. Which brings us to our next item.

CO-OP KICKSTARTER
Our list of needs is growing, but so is our list of supporters and members. One of our new members suggested at the January 2 meeting that we consider a Kickstarter to fund Phase II, Phase III, and beyond. For those of you not familiar with the purpose of a Kickstarter - it's similar to a GoFundMe, except you are not *donating* your money. You are paying up front for services that you will eventually receive from the Co-op. The idea being that if we have enough people join the Kickstarter, we'll be able to conduct our feasibility study, start construction of the Data Center, and get our grant and loan applications in for funding before the May 1 deadline. Once the fiber network reaches your house, you would receive services that you've already paid for through the Kickstarter. Keep in mind that we're a non-profit, member owned Co-op, so every service you pay for is patronage that counts towards your equity (ownership of assets and capital credit) in the Co-op.

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at the Powhatan County Public Library in the Large Conference Room starting at 6PM. We hope to see you there!
