THINK FIT BY DCAC!

THE SIMPLEST THREE-STEP STRATEGY FOR SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVING ANY GOAL

You’ve likely read that goal setting is an important part of the process for achieving success. Setting an ambitious, achievable, and empowering goal is indeed an important first step. However, once set, you need to forget your goals and instead focus on your process. While this sounds contrary to common belief, think about many of your clients, friends, or family members who have an ambitious New Year’s goal to lose weight, exercise more, drink less, etc.. For the majority of these individuals, regardless of how much enthusiasm they had when they started, they’ve abandoned their pursuit of their goals by March. You see, the problem is not with their goals, their motivation, or their discipline. The problem is with their process. In other words, they did not use a systematic process to support the successful pursuit of their goals. When you don’t have a systematic process, you will quickly fall back into your old habits which will derail your progress. That’s why the majority of New Year’s resolutions, diet and exercise programs, and other ambitious goals fall to wayside when life inevitably gets in the way.

However, there is a way to significantly increase your likelihood of success. Begin by setting and then forgetting your goal. Then focus 100% of your attention on developing and refining your process. Your process should involve adopting a micro-habit (a small and easy-to-achieve action). You want to tie your micro-habit to an existing habit, something you already do every single day. Finally, you will record and reward the successful completion of your new micro-habit. The process then is: Define an existing habit > Attach the new habit to the existing habit > record it and reward yourself.

Say your goal is to begin a daily meditation practice. Align your new habit (meditation) to an existing habit (for example, making your morning coffee). As the coffee is brewing, mediate for one minute. Keep a calendar next to your coffee maker (preferably on the wall so you can see it each day) and mark an ‘X’ on each day that you mediate. Then reward yourself by enjoying your coffee. Do this every single day and resolve to not break your streak of daily ‘X’s’.

By tying your new habit (meditation), to an existing habit (making coffee), you are making it a part of your daily routine. By recording it on your calendar, you are positively reinforcing yourself to continue doing it and to not break your streak. Your coffee reward is further reinforcement for your commitment to your new habit. As this new habit becomes a part of your daily habits, you can begin to extend the time you are meditating. By developing and focusing on your process rather than the goal itself, you will have a much greater likelihood for success.

CALLING ALL FITNESS FRIENDS!
As a volunteer, you will get a VIP Pass to attend classes on a space available basis when you are not scheduled to work. You will not be awarded Continuing Education Credits. If you would like to receive Continuing Education Credits, you can sign up as a staff assistant for $69. With that registration, you will also be able to choose tickets for classes on the day you are not working. Email me with questions.
