Nova Labs Rediscover the Joy of Making

Nova Labs is a nonprofit community innovation lab located in Reston, Virginia. We provide the space and tools to grow a community where enthusiastic collaborators of any skill level can converge to make things.

From teaching kids how to build circuits to building drones to help stop rhino poaching in South Africa, we use technology to make the world a better place. Our interests include: 3D Printing, Drones, Internet of Things, Hardware Innovation, Robotics, Woodworking and Machining and Crafts such as Knitting and Crocheting, Sewing, Silkscreening, and much, much more!

Operating as usual

11/29/2021

Member Dave W. came to Nova Labs to restore his 1939 Ford Deluxe Station Wagon, but he stayed to help be a steward in our woodshop, assisting with our weekly Woodshop Wednesday build night for new woodworkers, along with helping groups that come in to use our shops such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
More than just a fully equipped #makerspace with bustling #woodshop, #metalshop, #fabric and #textiles areas, #3dprinters, and #lasercutting, Nova Labs is a supportive community where people are willing to share their expertise and offer advice.
In early 2022 we are moving from Reston, VA to the @cityoffairfaxva , and we need your help for our #capitalcampaign - please consider a donation on #givingtuesday to support us and our mission.

💥 👩🏻‍🏭 Having a blast this weekend in the YOUNG WOMEN IN SKILLED TRADES: Welding and Woodworking Workshop!

In this two-day class, young women who are interested in learning about pathways to the skilled trades can practice hands-on skills and meet mentors in a variety of fields, from STEM to designers to craftspeople. Within a small cohort, young tradespeople will get personalized instruction and mentorship.

During the hands-on portion, the attendees will learn how to weld and grind steel safely, measure, cut and finish wood for fine woodworking and utilize computer aided design to manufacture 3-D printed parts. #NovaLabs #Metalworking #Woodworking #GrindingMetal #ToolTime #MetalShop #WoodShop #GirlPower #Welders

THE ROAD TO 3.0: Destination Achieved!
As we near our 10th anniversary, the board has exciting news - we’ve secured a permanent home! We purchased 3850 Jermantown Road in Fairfax City and on October 22nd received our keys! We are working with the architect now and will begin construction soon and move in early February.
We look forward to an exciting future and all the possibilities that our new space will bring. We’ve ensured the purchase leaves us with sufficient operating reserves, but building out the space, updating and adding equipment, and relaunching major programs like Maker Faire and E2M means we need to raise additional funds. I hope you’ll join me in contributing to the 3.0 Capital Campaign.

The Joy of Making Capital Campaign is a three-month effort to leverage donations for maximum impact. Donations committed by 12/31/2021 qualify us for matching funds from several organizations where we’ve submitted or are preparing grant applications.

Thank you to Nova Labs for your generous donation of over 600 face shields! These face shields will be distributed out to our various divisions and keep employees and those we serve safe during the Covid health emergency. 😷
Since everything started shutting down in March, Oakton High School's Oakton Cougar Robotics team has been working with Nova Labs of Reston to produce thousands of pieces of PPE for medical facilities, health centers, and other community organizations in the area. 3D printers have been printing around the clock to produce parts, and team members have been sewing and assembling non-stop. The team was very excited about the opportunity to help keep Britepaths' staff, volunteers, and clients safe as well by donating masks, face shields and ear savers. Our Data Architect Gwendyl Harter (back right) has been involved with the team with her children and helped facilitate the donation. We are so grateful to the team for these generous donations and for all their great work to help our neighbors on the front lines! Given that our offices are currently closed, this donation gives us a sufficient supply of PPE for the time being. We'll reach out if we find that we need more donations in the coming months.
Nova Labs of Reston, Va., supplied Catholic Charities staff with a generous donation of 500 face shields. We’ve had an abundance of new clients seeking help during the pandemic. This donation allows us to work safely with them and in the community. Thank you, #faceshield makers. #PPE #GetusPPE #3Dprinting #lasercutting #makersrespond #DMV #COVID19Response #PPEChallenge
Thank you to Nova Labs for hosting two sessions for our Healthy Bridges participants! They hosted one session on the brain and mindfulness. In the second session, they taught girls how to sew their own masks and sent kits to each girl!
