Contra Costa Health Services

📢📢➡️Our public health crisis is worsening and we need to take some immediate action.

▪️According to the new health order, indoor worship services are temporarily prohibited, effective on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Services held earlier on Sunday, July 12, are not subject to this change.

▪️... outdoor gatherings, including worship services and social protests, are permitted at any size in Contra Costa so long as state health guidelines are followed, including physical distancing and appropriate use of face coverings.

▪️In outdoor dining settings, staff and customers must now observe face covering requirements at all times, except when putting food or drink in the mouth. The new order also increases guidance for businesses that serve alcohol with meals to better align with state guidelines.

▪️Members of extended family “social bubbles” must now always use face coverings when together, except when putting food or drink in the mouth.

▪️Contra Costa County hopes to ease these enhanced, extraordinary safety measures as soon as possible, and will review available health system data daily to determine when it is safe to do so.

Have you read Robert Rogers article today in the West County Times on the Juneteenth Family Day Parade & Festival? One of the best quotes was by Mark Adams, Jr., one of the original leaders of the funk group Slave:

"We've heard about Richmond's Juneteenth celebration for years; it's one of the great festivals of Northern California," Adams said. "When the organizers reached out to us, we were excited to do it. We know Richmond loves the funk."

Today is the official date of what is known as Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Emancipation Day.

Juneteenth, or the 19th of June as my family references it, is a holiday that commemorates the date in 1865 when black people in Texas learned that they were no longer in chattel slavery.

Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, with the effective date of January 1, 1863. Although it declared the end of slavery in confederate states, it had little effect because states were slow in freeing slaves. Blacks in Texas were not freed until two years later.

The first known Juneteenth celebrations occurred in Galveston, Texas in 1866. Over the years, blacks combined their money and purchased property to hold Juneteenth celebrations.

In Houston, Rev Jack Yates, a former slave and baptist minister, joined with other former slaves to purchase property to build their own churches and homes. In 1872, they pooled $800 to purchase10 acres of land as home for their Juneteenth celebrations. They named the land Emancipation Park. Emancipation Park is located in the historic, African American Third Ward in Houston, Tx.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated worldwide with church services, festivals, parties, reunions, dramatic readings and family gatherings. Over the years, My mom has shared her early memories of Juneteenth with me. She said that her teachers would cancel classes on the 19th of June. She remembers wearing her best attire and attending Juneteenth outings at Emancipation Park with her parents and extended family in the 1950s. She said that the excitement would build up in May, and they celebrated the holiday throughout the entire month of June.

President Jerrold Hatchett, members of the Neighborhood Block Association, the Juneteenth Committee and all of out sponsors wish you a wonderful 19th of June. We invite you and your family and friends out to Nichol Park in Richmond next Saturday, June 28th, to join us for the final Juneteenth festival in the Bay Area and commemorate freedom and the rich culture of black people. Our goal is that your family's experience is as memorable as my mom's even decades later.
God bless,
Latressa
Festival Coordinator
