What an incredibly beautiful weekend. Fun was had by all at the annual Piedmont Farm Tour. No rain, no hail, no stormy winds. Just fun in the sun. Our sincere thanks to our family support from Denise, Ike, Kirk, Lorena, Tabitha, and Bonnie. And we couldn't have done it without Christina and Belo from Thrills from the Grill who cooked many many bison burgers, sliders and brats for the 198 guests who came on Saturday for the farm tour. And then there's our sincerest thanks to Donnie and Renee (Marie) who sold meat and answered 100's of questions for our guests. The volunteers, John, Brock, Ivy and Phil were so essential to signing in and distributing pins and numbers for tours. And then to Jack and Thaddeus for the many tours conducted on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 330 guests were able to see how the animals are raised and also visited them in the pasture to see the three newborn calves. Thanks to all named and unnamed for your continued support of our farm efforts to raise healthy animals and provide a unique healthy and delicious meat.

Just as all the hard work was complete last Thursday putting up the high peak tents, the rains came on Friday and Saturday. We returned from Farmers Market on Saturday afternoon to a potential rain disaster with the tents .Poor Jack worked for hours getting water off and avoiding a tear or collapse of the newly erected tent and neighbor Nick came to help him. Thanks so much, Nick. Order now restored. And the rains are coming again tomorrow.😲

Thursday, Jack and his wonderful helpers spent the morning putting up the two high peak tents in preparation for farm tour weekend on April 27th and 28th, as well as May and June weddings. See pictures of this process. There is a reason the tents are not cheap to rent. It's a lot of work. Thanks to Jack, Joseph, Thaddeus, Martin, and Seth for your hard work.

Where has this new year gone?! Much of our time during the past six months of 2018 were spent in doctors' offices, in surgery and in recovery from rotator cuff surgery for Sandy. Then there was an unexpected surgery on her thyroid in early December. All is well now. The shoulder surgery has sidelined Sandy a bit but she is slowly recovering with the excellent caretaking of Jack.

Henceforth, Sandy will get back into the swing of posting on facebook to let you know what's happening on the farm. We're getting ready for the annual Piedmont Farm Tour sponsored by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association the last weekend of April, on the 27th and 28th. We hope you will plan to come.

Exciting times this past week at the farm. We found out on Tuesday that our farm would be featured on PBS/UNC TV, NC Weekend on Thursday evening at 9 p.m. The segment was perfect, and Jack did a fantastic job! He's a natural! Today we have been receiving calls for a wagon tour at our farm. We cannot do individual tours or small groups unless you want Jack to take your small group into the pastures in his Ford pickup truck. Those tours are $50.
So Jack decided that we will offer a tour on Sunday, July 22, at 2 p.m. Adults $9, Senior Citizens (60+) and kids 4-17 $7. Children 3 and under are free. Hope you will bring family and friends and come enjoy a visit with the bison.

If you missed it, go online to NCWeekend/Buffalo and you can watch the segment. And you can come to the farm and see the animals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

What a weekend! Sandy and Jack worked diligently preparing for the first wedding of the year on Friday. Nature had not been kind this past winter. Flowers were scarse. Weeds did abound! 😯 Jack and Sandy worked and worked to spiff up the place for our special couple, Kirsten and Sam. March winds forgot their place and played havoc. But nothing could take away the joy and happiness as they celebrated their wedding day on Friday. Best wishes go with this beautiful couple. Hope they enjoy many years together and remember how happy they were on this day.

Jack and Sandy will be at both the Durham and Carrboro Farmers' Markets this coming Saturday and hope to see you there. Be sure and ask about the delicious Bison Dinner we are hosting at our farm on April 29th! We will have tickets for sale.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! It's that time of year again - the Piedmont Farm Tour is happening on April 28th and 29th, and Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm is on that tour! You can find more info at Carolina Farm Stewardship Association website. See you there!!!!

The snow came and went this past Monday. We hope that this is the final burst of winter weather and we can look forward to a few weeks of springtime days filled with sunshine, short sleeves and the opportunity to do some much needed yardwork. We look forward to a spring wedding in early April at our gazebo and ask the weather-gods to shine down upon this beautiful couples special day.

Jack and Sandy will be at both the Carrboro and Durham Farmers Markets this coming Saturday, with a good supply of delicious bison meat. Stop by and visit with them and pick out something for dinner next week or for a fun weekend gathering with friends and family. Come see us at the market.

OMG! SNOW! The buffs love it. We, not so much! Poor Jack has been working himself silly keeping the waterers in each pasture thawed out so the buffs don't get antsy. Our own water system had a failure for two days but he was able to do a temporary fix for that. He is indeed a Jack-Of-All-Trades and as he likes to say "Master of NONE". I am grateful to him for the expertise he has in all things fixable. And if he can't fix it, he will duct tape it temporarily until he can figure it out!
He's out today riding in his nice warm tractor and scraping the roads, so we can both hopefully go to the Farmers' Markets in Carrboro and Durham on Saturday. More pix will follow as soon as Sandy can figure out how to get them off her phone and onto the PC!

Sandy made a delicious Christmas dish. Son-in-law Mike shared a picture of the bison osso bucco which was so tender. He declared it "professional" looking! The bison shanks were browned for 4 minutes on each side. Onions, celery and carrots were sauted in the pan drippings for 5 to 6 minutes in a ceramic dutch oven. Bison stock was added. The shanks were added and cooked in a 300 degree oven for 3 hours. Yum.

As we begin this new year, we want to take a moment to remember Thomas, our 13 year old bull, pictured below. (Thanks Mark for capturing him on your phone camera.) Sandy named him Thomas, after Jack's dad. He was a sort of a gentle giant of a bull. He never seemed ruffled or got too exited. He would go off alone in part of the pasture away from the herd. Jack found him one day recently in the pasture. It seemed that he had just sat down and quietly died. We don't know why. But we are grateful for his time with the herd and all the little calves he sired at Sunset Ridge.

We have openings available and we'd like to invite couples who are planning to marry this year to come out and see our farm and facility. We'd love to be part of your special day!

Sandy and Jack were at Hall's Way in Roxboro Thursday and gave out samples of Sandy's prize winning bison chili. She also shared her recipe with those who came out to sample.

So, if you have your recipe and want to purchase ground bison to make it, then check out Hall's Way, as they have SRBF bison in their freezer.

What a weekend! Saturday dawned with misty rain and was somewhat chilly throughout the day. Sunday was a gloriously beautiful, perfect weather day! On Saturday, Raven and Calvin were married at The Gazebo. Calvin's parents have been neighbors and friends of Jack and Sandy's for many years. It is exciting and heartwarming when friends or family choose The Gazebo for their wedding or special occasion.
