Thinking of Emily today as she makes history. Proud to be part of Emily's Army.

The day has finally come!!!!

Emily is about to get her first infusion of car t-cells and Dr. Vitanza is the proud new owner of shiny black Crocs. Literal history in the making on both counts.

As we go into the unknown in the next few minutes we appreciate your prayers for the most minimal reaction, if at all. Her team has plans in place for every scenario so we're confident she's in excellent hands.

We'll keep you posted as the day goes on.

💜

(Shout out to @ChristineHessO'Connell (ImmunoMomentum) for reaching to to Crocs and snagging these snazzy shoes!)

A special thank you to Erin Cordry and the entire @pbtrf team. Having started the Run of Hope in partnership with Four Seasons Seattle after her son battled medulloblastoma, she remains the heart and soul behind this event. Her guild, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Fund, works all year long to make Run of Hope happen and because of their commitment and hard work, nearly $7 million dollars has been sent to @seattlechildrens to fund research. Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to this amazing accomplishment, 100% of which are volunteers.

We hope to see you all in person next year. Until then, thank you for the hope you have given to so many.

Hope Will Be There Waiting.

We asked 15 year old brain cancer survivor, Avery Berg, if she would write us a poem that reflects these uncertain times for our Virtual Run of Hope. Thank you for your beautiful words, Avery. And for your continued commitment to fight for all pediatric brain tumor patients. We can be the army we enlist! ❤️

Danica is a 4 year old sweet and silly, spicy little lady. She looks like a delicate pixie—but she is made of sterner stuff than most of us. She has been fighting AT/RT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor) for nearly three years. She has had chemo, radiation, and 23 surgeries. Her mom, Audrey, says "She is like a hardy flower that keeps coming back to bloom after the most vicious winter. But her disease is smart: it came back, too. Like many parents, we consulted far and wide for the best options we could find. We were told by the most renowned clinics in the world, "There are options, all of which you are pursuing, none of which are curative.”

Today, Danica is participating in a clinical trial that her doctors at Seattle Children’s found for her. Her body is responding. She is doing well, and we hope for continued success. With all these new therapies coming out, it’s not unreasonable to believe that some of them will begin to allow children to slip through the cracks and survive. We hope that some day, NO ONE will hear the awful words, “Nothing curative."

Audrey will be our parent speaker at our virtual event this year. She and Danica and their entire family and community have endured more than one can possibly imagine. Don't miss hearing their incredible story. No need to register to view the program. Just go to runofhopeseattle.org at 10:00 a.m. PST this Sunday, September 27th.

Thank you for your spirit and your grit, Danica and Audrey. Keep fighting. We run for you.

Sarah M. Hughes. It's been 10 years since she's been gone, but her spirit is ever-present at the Run of Hope, in this community and far beyond. This year has been a real challenge for so many. When we were deciding whether or not we were even going to be able to pull off a Run of Hope this year, with fewer sponsors and not knowing how to gather or how to fundraise during such hardship, the Sarah M. Hughes Foundation stepped in and pledged to sponsor Run of Hope and make it happen. This is just one of the many ways they have been supporting us throughout the years. Sarah's mom, Heather, says, "Sarah made the world a better place; the Sarah M. Hughes Foundation is dedicated to following her lead. We seek to share the joy she brought us through targeted giving to cancer research, medical and educational scholarships, and financial aid to children in need. It is our goal to keep Sarah’s fire aglow and spread her light throughout our community.”

Every year, the Sarah M. Hughes Award is given to the top fundraising team in her honor. Sarah, thank you for continuing to inspire us with your overwhelming spirit and light. We run for you.

Dr. Jim Olson discusses survival rates and why they're higher in Seattle.

Dr. Olson has dedicated his life to finding better treatment options for pediatric brain tumor patients. He is the mind behind "Tumor Paint", a revolutionary procedure that uses scorpion venom to chemically adhere to cancer cells and causes them to glow. It is thousands of times more sensitive than MRI imagery, enabling surgeons to distinguish easily between deadly cancer cells and surrounding healthy tissue.
Building on the success of Tumor Paint, Dr. Olson and his colleagues are now developing a new class of drugs called optides, short for “optimized peptides.” Unlike chemotherapies, which usually destroy healthy tissue alongside the cancerous cells they target, optides can zero in on cancer cells. Dr. Olson’s team is using naturally occurring molecules to engineer new optides that could fight many difficult-to-treat cancers, brain disorders and other diseases.
Hear a message from Dr. Olson and learn why Seattle Children's Hospital has a survival rate about 10% higher than the rest of the country. Your donations to fund research make this possible. Donate to Run of Hope between now and Saturday, September 19th and all donations are being matched up to $50,000. This gift was made possible by the generosity of Dr. Olson’s mother, in honor of her late brother, Leo. ❤️ Thank you, Olson family!

Meet the Seattle Children's Hospital Precision Medicine Team

Seattle Children's Hospital is so fortunate to have people like Dr. Sarah Leary and her team. Together, they launched the Precision Medicine Program which is providing cutting edge research between science and the clinic. There are over a hundred different types of pediatric brain tumors, and precision medicine is allowing more targeted treatment options. Dr. Leary says, "This year our other national sources of funding are unfortunately cutting back, but we are continuing our work with a full team to translate new science into improved testing, treatment and now prevention of childhood brain tumors. I took a snapshot of our current brain tumor clinical trials in the past couple weeks, and despite all the COVID19-related hurtles, we currently have the largest number of clinical trials (36 active) than we have EVER been able to offer children at Seattle Children’s. One of the reasons we have so many trials, is we are studying more and more precise treatments that may be right for a few specific kids, which means we need more trials to offer new treatments to everyone. Another thing we could not do without Run of Hope support!" Here's to Cancer Annihilation! Go team CASCADE!

General information

Funds already raised for research have contributed to the development of Tumor Paint, a fluorescent paint made by the venom of a scorpion, which helps neurosurgeons discern where a tumor begins and ends, which enables surgeons to more precisely remove the entire tumor. Revolutionary discoveries like Tumor Paint are making a difference in the lives of children, but more research is needed! You can directly contribute to this important work by lacing up your shoes and participating in the Run of Hope!
