Last year, The Lake City Summer Festival and Parade was proud to host the ceremony for Eric and Debbie, and to remember the tragedy that occurred in our neighborhood. Take a moment to hold your loved ones close.

One year ago today, the City of Seattle named Aug. 3rd "Eric Stark Day" in honor of Mr. Stark's heroism. He maneuvered his Route 75 bus out of danger after being shot. He saved his passengers’ lives.

In the time since the March 2019 shooting, Mr. Stark, a driver for King County Metro, and the officers who offered life-saving first aid have become friends.

To thank those officers, as well as the entire department, Mr. Stark, his family and friends have created a "challenge coin" for officers to keep. Inscribed on the coin is this message: "Your selfless dedication and tireless efforts have touched and changed countless people in our community. We honor you. We thank you."

We thank you Mr. Stark for your kindness and bravery. You truly are a hero.

"Innocent citizens, neighbors, friends and passers-by.
Why?! We ask ourselves why …
Fragile as china, strong as steel .
We remain friendly, watchful,
active neighbors looking out for each other.
This is the Lake City Way, the only way."

-Taken from "Life, Precious Life," a poem by Raúl Sánchez, remembering the tragic events of March 27, 2019.

The Lake City Living Memorial Triangle is the work of our dedicated neighbors to create lasting beauty from the chaos.

Please have a look at the website, read the stories, and consider donating.

Seattle neighbors created a memorial garden and beautification project after gun violence in March 2019. We honor 2 people who were killed and support 2 others who were injured. Please visit and reflect. Join our community.

Public Health - Seattle & King County

It's time! King County wants to reach 65,000 uninsured people who could get health insurance this fall.

Did you know? The uninsured rate is 55% lower than in 2013, when the first #ACA Open Enrollment launched. More than 200,000 people in King County have coverage through Wahealthplanfinder. But 65,000 remain uninsured, maybe not realizing that free or affordable insurance is available.

#OpenEnrollment starts Friday. We are a lead agency to help people #GetCovered. Learn more at https://publichealthinsider.com/2019/10/30/help-king-county-reach-65000-uninsured-people/

The Senior and Latino community in Lake City is mourning the loss of Maria, a beloved member of Lake City Seniors, who along with her husband Agustin were crossing the street at the corner of NE 125th St and 28th Ave NE to attend the Senior Program at the LC Community Center, like they have done for years, when they were struck by a vehicle. This happened on Monday, September 30th at around 9am, the driver did not stop and ran away. Agustin survived, but Maria passed away a couple days ago.
This is very unfortunate specially because the hugely needed crosswalk at that intersection may see crossing improvements that Maria, Agustin and other Latino Seniors voted for when we did outreach for the 2019 Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) voting phase.
Staff from Sound Generations, SeaMar in Lake City and other community members are providing support to the grieving seniors. D5 councilmember was contacted to let her know about this issue, and we've reached out to the Seattle Police Department - North Precinct for a follow-up as Agustin told us today he has not heard from them.
We urge them to move swiftly to bring justice to Maria and Agustin.
We don't want this tragedy to our community members go unnoticed. We are asking for your support in contacting CM #D5Juarez to make sure #SeattleDOT NSF Project ID # 2019-171 is implemented ASAP, starting by building a safe crosswalk where this hit & run occured, where lots of neighbors of all ages cross daily to go to our LC hub.
Lake City Latino Seniors are planning a vigil to honor Maria at the corner near the library, but will do whenever Agustin is ready.
We'll let you know when that happens.
They're also having a fundraising this Friday, October 11th, during their program between 10am and 1pm to help support Agustin during this tough time. You're welcome to stop by the LC Community Center during that time even if it's only to express sympathy. Thank you.

Thank you, Lake Citizens and Seattle Mennonite Church, for raising $295 to help Real Rent Duwamish at The Lake City Summer Festival this year.

Thank you to the Seattle Mennonite Church, housed in the building with this mural on its wall, for showing the film "Princess Angeline" as part of Lake City's Summer Festival (which used to be called Pioneer Days). The event was free and many folks attended and learned of Chief Seattle's daughter 'Angeline' and they collected $295 for the benefit of the Duwamish Tribe.

One week until your Lake City Summer Festival and Parade!
54 years ago, a different Seattle, a much younger me, my first time to Seattle, wearing a uniform of the U.S. Coast Guard, that band and honor guard brought up from Training Center Government Island, San Francisco Bay, California, brought north to march in most of those neighborhood Seafair Parades including the one organized by Lake City. Those members of the Lake City J.C.'s with their Salmon BBQ set up along Lake City Way (I had my first taste of fresh salmon). The friendly boosters of the Lake City neighborhood--there was pride aplenty for their neighborhood, for this city and the Puget Sound region. A different city, a different time before Dot.com became a well known and understood term---when a cell phone would have been considered science fiction, when Seattle was the laid back home town for Boeing Commercial Aircraft, when I was young, when life seemed simpler.
Councilmember Debora Juarez is hosting her 4th annual Dive in D5 event on Friday, February 1st at 6-8 PM! It's a community celebration for North Seattle.
