Urban Craft Uprising Urban Craft Uprising is Seattle's favorite Indie Craft Show, established in 2005. Urban Craft Uprising is Seattle's largest indie craft show!

At UCU, fans can choose from a wide varieof hand-crafted goods, including clothing of all types, jewelry, gifts, bags, wallets, buttons, accessories, aprons, children's goods, toys, housewares, paper goods, candles, kits, art, food, and much, much more. Each show is carefully curated and juried to ensure the best mix of crafts and arts, along with quality and originality. This bi-annual show showcases over 100 vendors excelling in the world of craft, art and design. Over the course of 8 years, UCU has garnered so much attention that nearly 12,000 fans swarmed to the show over the course of the last winter show weekend.

Mission: Urban Craft Uprising aims to build a local (and beyond) community of artists, crafters and designers by organizing and providing events where indie crafters and artists can connect with their fans. In addition, Urban Craft Uprising promotes other community building activities, including our crafting shows, showcases, classes, events, Camp ThunderCraft, sponsorships, online presence and other local activities. How did you get started in your business?

I managed a ceramic design studio in NYC. I moved to Tacoma for a teaching job and started making lamps for my new home. After a few requests to make lamps for friends I started selling on Etsy.

What is your favorite new product for 2020?

This year we've been standardizing a lot of our popular combinations--like a super soft sport weight blend of alpaca and merino, for example, or our luxury cashmere blends--and offering them in a dozen different color combinations for easy shopping. These combinations have always been an option for customers to put together themselves using our Custom Yarn Creator, but I know that designing a yarn from scratch can be intimidating to some people, so having these suggested combinations ready to go has been helpful in getting the ball rolling. And of course we can always customize further if you don't see the color you're looking for, or want it wound up in a different weight.

What's something you've learned through running your business in the past 12 months?

"That the tools we are all learning to use to get us through COVID can be just as useful in cultivating customer relationships in an online business. We closed our brick & mortar shop in 2016 and moved to online-only. Yarn is a funny business for the online world, because of course customers want to be able to see, touch, swatch, and feel the yarn. Even prior to closing our B&M I'd always offered to send samples and swatch photos to our faraway customers, and used tools like intensive consultations over email or the chat feature on our website to help customers design their perfect yarn.

But now that everyone is so used to Zooming and screensharing, I've been able to take this up a notch and get my customers just about as close to the real-life experience as possible, with video consultations, demos of me winding their yarn, and even a weekly Virtual Knit & Crochet Night that we started up back in the spring when COVID first hit. It's been a great way to connect with both new customers who are just discovering us, as well as reconnecting with longtime customers whose faces I miss from when they used to come in to the shop back in the day!"

I miss meeting all of my customers in person! This year I have had to switch my business from 90% in person to 100% online, and I am so thankful to platforms like instagram to help me feel connected to all of you while staying home and staying safe.

I am a very big West Wing fan so developing the West Wing line of candles was definitely a labor of love and of course I had to rewatch my favorite episodes for research purposes.

I've seen a lot of people buy candles as gifts for friends who remind them of a certain TV character. Everyone knows a Monica or a Swanson and to get to send them that candle brings a lot of joy.

My favorite new product in 2020 is the Enclosed Houseplant Terrarium Kit! Enclosed terrariums are a self-contained ecosystem that can flourish for months, if not, YEARS, without being watered, being mindful that it needs proper light. Because of the enclosure, it allows the terrarium to recycle its water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen.

I had a growing stash of used candle jars and didn't want to throw them away, so I upcycled one of the candle jars and created a succulent terrarium arrangement! Thus, the brand Live Long and Plant was born!

Our KITS are our favorite new product because they give us the opportunity to distill the magic of our in-person classes into tangible things which can continue to fuel creativity and connection.

The Works Seattle started with Kellie Phelan's journey of humble beginnings as a one-woman pop-up, to moving in with Seattle Seed Company, to taking over the space and offering almost 30 in-person classes a month! Since then, Covid has taken us in some new directions, and just eight months later, we are lucky to be operating a thriving DIY kit business.

I am actually new to vending and sponsoring craft shows. I really miss attending craft shows as that is where I look to shop for both myself and for my shop.

What is your favorite new product for 2020?

I'm really excited about our face serum. It is a light, easily absorbed formula for mature skin. which is super moisturizing and nourishing. It smells delicious and it feels wonderful on skin. It is perfect for oily to dry skin and can be used after your morning cleansing routine (followed by make up if that's your thing) and at night before going to bed.

I miss guiding people through the sensory experience of feeling and smelling my products and helping them choose a scent just for them or the bearded person they love.

Can anyone suggest a way to remove, with a saw? the 3" platform soles of some others pretty cool boots? I am already almost 6 foot, so.... I would love to keep them as flats. They are som think black foam but hard rubber. I can take and post a pic in the comments if needed!
Are Thursdays in Occidental Square happening beginning July 2? The description talks about cruise ships and doesn't talk about safety protocols...so just wondering....
I have a question about a reseller’s permit that I’m hoping the WA crafting community can help me with. I used to do garden design and had a permit for buying plants and other landscape stuff. But I’ve now switched to focusing on my art and need to update my permit. I make mobiles made of found nature and other things, and the materials I buy include air plants (to put inside the mobiles) assorted jewelry materials, and metal tubing. I contacted WA DOR to ask about the change and they told me to get the right code from NAICS. I looked through the codes but just got more confused and when I emailed for help at NAICS, they just referred me back to DOR! The code for independent artist is 711510. Does anyone know if this code is sufficient and broad enough to cover purchase of various materials (ie. not only limited to “art supplies”) ? I’d appreciate any feedback that could help me. Thanks so much!

Hi! I'm downsizing my space and have hundreds of yards of high quality fabric (silk, t-shirt knits, corduroy, etc.) along with bins full of sewing notions and craft supplies that I'm looking to sell. I'm looking for more of an open market space vs. listing everything individually online - any suggestions? TIA!
