Voye with Pride on Coming Out Day!

10/11/2020

“Most people think they don’t know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.” - Robert Eichsberg (d. 1992, AIDS)

Coming out — whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer — STILL MATTERS. When people know someone who is LGBTQIA+, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other.

During a time when our communities and country are divided, we’re out to remind people of the importance of this election and the importance of voting – my vote, your vote, every vote. Someone tried to burn down this Black-owned coffee shop in Shoreline at 3:30AM. They even took the time to walk to the back of the building, put a bag over the gas lines and use that to set the lines on fire. Security footage captured a middle age white man lighting the fires.
https://www.facebook.com/10741676/posts/10110959189558178/?app=fbl
Luckily the damage was confined to the external parts of the building.
The grand opening was supposed to be tomorrow, but is being postponed. This space was largely designed by Shoreline area Black youth as a safe gathering place for other Black youth and community members. Today these youth got to see the aftermath of a grown adult trying to destroy all of that hard work.
Black Coffee NW is taking online donations, please consider donating if you can and raising awareness about what happened here.

Since the Census was created, it has served the interests of white and wealthy populations and has funneled more resources into those communities and away from the communities that need it the most. Though the Census does not explicitly ask about gender identity or sexual orientation, we know that our LGBTQIA+ people exist within all the different populations that are undercounted and underserved.

Results from the Census are used to determine what share of $883 billion in federal funding goes to different social service programs.

We can't afford to NOT be counted.
Fill out your census NOW - the deadline is 9/30!

We saved an amazing grantee for last - join us in celebrating @LGBTQAllyship - building power among LGBTQIA+ communities and allies statewide to work towards economic, racial and gender justice.

“We are grateful for the support of Seattle Pride in bolstering LGBTQ Allyship's work in addressing LGBTQ+ marginalized senior invisibility, social isolation and economic challenges during COVID-19. Seattle Pride's grant will provide much needed educational opportunities and community support to enhance our senior community's resilience and fortitude during these challenging times."

The community grant recipient we are recognizing today is the Seattle Public Schools’ "Our Students, Their Stories" Project. The project highlights the stories of LGBTQIA+ students across the district via a portrait storytelling book and photo exhibit depicting LGBTQIA+ staff, students and their families.

“Seattle Public Schools is tremendously grateful to Seattle PRIDE for its generous donation to support the “Our Students, Their Stories” Portrait/Storytelling project. This project captures images and stories from LGBTQ+ staff, students, and their families from across the district. The project will culminate in a book and photo exhibit that will be used as educational material for staff training, and for students across grade levels.”

Today we're celebrating our grant recipient @NFFTY who work to encourage and acknowledge young artists working in media arts – promoting their accomplishments through festivals and programs, and celebrating their talent and the compelling stories they tell.

"In a pandemic year when funders are pivoting their focus from the arts, which is perpetually in danger of being deemed "not essential", Seattle Pride is steadfast in uplifting the voices of underrepresented and marginalized storytellers. NFFTY is grateful for the continued support of Seattle Pride, which underwrites our featured LGBTQIA+ filmmaker showcase and provides cash award to a promising queer filmmaker." --Dan Hudson, Executive Director, NFFTY

Stay safe, darlings!
09/11/2020

Stay safe, darlings!

Air quality will remain unhealthy through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. We encourage you to take action to stay safe.

• Stay inside as much as possible. Continue to follow COVID-19 guidance related to small indoor gatherings.
• While cloth masks help in preventing COVID-19, they are not effective with wildfire smoke.
• Refrain from intense outdoor activity.
• Keep your indoor clean by closing windows and doors as much as possible. Do not smoke, use candles or vacuum.
• Use fans or air condition units to keep cool. Ensure your AC unit is set to recirculate.
• Stay hydrated.
• Check on at-risk and elderly family and neighbors
• Certain populations are at higher risk and should be extra vigilant — residents over the age of 65, pregnant people, children and babies, and people with underlying health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and respiratory issues.
• Public Health – Seattle & King County has additional information and tips about dealing with wildfire smoke: kingcounty.gov/wildfiresmoke
• Monitor Puget Sound Clean Air Agency for the most up-to-date air quality: pscleanair.gov

We will continue to see warm and dry weather, so along with limiting exposure to smoke, please take steps to prevent additional fires.

• Clear long grass, weeds, or anything that can burn, away from structures.
• Remove any pine needles, leaves and debris from your gutters.
• Move trash cans away from your home.
• Avoid mowing your yard when it is dry or windy. Lawn mowers can create sparks.
• Keep your yard green and watered, if possible.
• Throw away smoking materials in proper receptacles and douse them with water.
• Check your tire pressure before driving. Exposed rims can create and throw sparks.
• Ensure no metal objects are dragging from your car.
• King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks has more information about wildfire safety at home: bit.ly/kcfirewise

Today we mourn the lives lost from the 9/11 attack. We also want to acknowledge the front-line workers who were desperately needed in a time of disaster. 19 years later, we find our country lost and scared with multiple tragedies that rely so heavily on front-line workers to fix. Many of the victims and front-line workers from 2001 and from today are our LGBTQIA+ brothers and sisters. We thank you and we support you.
