06/07/2020

As the organizers of the Seattle Acoustic Festival, we would like to say that Black Lives Matter. Also, we condemn the violent response to the 2020 protests across the US. We also join the chorus of local organizations calling for immediate safeguards to protect members of the public from police brutality. #BlackLivesMatter

SAF Spotlight #6: Tekla Waterfield

Tekla was born for music. Her father was an opera singer in college, her mom a master of the strings (cell, guitar, violin) and sang. Growing up, she and her sister were always out at parties and shows to see their mother’s various bands – which quickly taught them how to harmonize.

As an avid writer and lover of music, songwriting came naturally as she became more involved with music. Influenced by the likes of Gillian Welch, Wilco, Phosphorescence, courtney barnett, The Velvet Underground, and the live music scene, she delivers an uncanny blend of indie, Americana, folk, and soul. As her songwriting has evolved, her lyrical content has expanded beyond relationships and emotions, encompassing the greater human experience.

After she wows you at today’s Seattle Acoustic Festival 2018 5th Annual performance – 8:30pm on the Sanctuary stage – be sure to mark your calendar for October 11th where she’ll be playing the Tractor Tavern to celebrate the vinyl release of her new album “The Curtain Falls”.

SAF Spotlight #5: Warren Dunes feat. Julia Massey

Ever since college, Julia Massey has been honing her songwriting craft. Inspired by the records of Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones (Thriller), and Joni Mitchell (Blue), her songwriting explores the current political/environmental landscape to the mysteries of nature and the cosmos.

Formed in May 2017, Warren Dunes featuring Julia Massey combines the songwriting prowess of Julia and her partner / songwriting collaborator Jared to deliver heartfelt, Calypso-inspired songs about how to be human. What excites them about the Seattle Acoustic Festival is the rarity of a festival setting that features acoustic music and “the intimacy that these kinds of sets offer on a larger scale”.

Their new single “What Did You Find Out” is coming soon, so keep your ears to the ground. You just may be able to catch a sneak peak during their set Friday, August 24th at 8:30pm on the Sanctuary Stage. We’ll see you there.

SAF Spotlight #4: Sunflower Sutra

This band has quite the story of perseverance. Originally formed in 2002, visa issues caused one member to leave the country. 12 years went by before they got him back (2016), but they've been playing ever since.

Their eclectic sound is derived primarily from 60s and 70s rock and roll, often with a dash of jazz, R&B, and/or classic country. From Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, to Grateful Dead and Steely Dan – if you’re musical interests lie in this spectrum, they’ve got something for you!

At the SAF, you’ll get the privilege of newly arranged songs to translate the band’s electric (rock) tracks into an acoustic setting. Their live set will be unlike any other – as Sunflower Sutra is a very visual band. With live dancers and painters, they bring a festival-like atmosphere regardless of the set-type or venue.

You certainly won't want to miss them - Saturday August 25th, they’re closing out the Sanctuary stage at 10:30pm sharp.

SAF Spotlight #3: Kristin Chambers
Kristin Chambers moves through American songbook with the easy grace that comes from a lifetime steeped in song. On her new record Unravel Me, the Seattle-based artist glides between luxurious, sweeping ballads cascading with multilayered vocal harmonies, folk-inflected uplifting pop, and bluesy laments to lost love; all tied together with a lilting voice warm as summer sunshine. While each composition stands on its own, together they paint a portrait of a creative spirit striding confidently into the spotlight.

Be sure and check out Kristin Chambers on Saturday August 25th at 4:30 on the Sanctuary Stage

SAF Spotlight #2: Tyler Edwards
This week’s spotlight singer-songwriter has done it all. He got hooked on touring with a his college band and he managed a radio station in South Carolina. After the band dissolved, he quit his job, wrote and recorded some new songs, and moved to Seattle to start over. Bridging rock, folk, and country, he creates songs that “go past a one-dimensional experience” that show listeners pieces of themselves and take them somewhere they’ve never been before.

The beauty of the Seattle Acoustic Festival, in his eyes, is that there is “minimal fluff”. Great songs will truly standout. Better yet, the festival is comprised of a fantastic community where people come together for the love of music and each other. To catch his genius at the Seattle Acoustic Festival 2018 5th Annual, make sure you’re at the Sanctuary stage at 10pm – Friday, August 24th.

SAF Spotlight #1: Devin Sinha.
This seasoned songwriter got his start with music in the first grade when his parents signed him up for piano lessons (who can relate?). Hailing from the Midwest, Devin delivers a mixture of contemporary folk and indie rock with elegant instrumentation and lyricism. He burst onto the Seattle scene in 2014 with the first of his three studio albums, The Seventh Season, and performed at the inaugural Seattle Acoustic Festival (which he’s played every year since)! He noted the SAF “always feels like a reunion to see all our friends in the music community”. Be sure to check out his set Saturday, August 25th at 3:30pm on the Sanctuary Stage at Seattle Acoustic Festival 2018 5th Annual.

Can’t wait that long? We’ve got you covered. He’s performing at Marymoor Park July 28th for Angry Orchard Rock the Roots: Seattle, WA, and headlining Barboza August 9th.

One of the most humble, positive, giving, and talented people in the Seattle music scene, the Seattle Acoustic Festival would not be possible without Tobias the Owl.

Whether he is singing songs about groundhog day or difficult math equations or speaking of being a voice actor along side William freaking Shattner, you can feel the heart he puts into his art. On behalf of a grateful crowd, we thank you.....and thank Anna St. Lee for running the ticketing table....and thanks for the pizza.

Now go buy his album.

*No, this is not Tobias posting this. 😃

GONNA BE A GOOD ONE Hi fans, folks and friends. This is gonna be a special show this Friday at Grumpy D's in Ballard. The Well Said duo of Nick Nordahl and I will be playing some of my new songs and some older songs I either haven't played in a while or haven't played out at all. It's going to be an intimate performance in a welcoming community space. Nick and I would really love to see your lovely faces in the audience. Hope all is well with you and yours. See you soon. Cheers for now. David & Nick. (And we have some great 'merch' for sale. We have a free double cassette of two of my acoustic EP's featuring Nick on one and Jeremy Serwer on the other. Also available is my complete "Body of Work" on a handy-dandy wallet-sized flash drive. That's sixty songs, sixty dollars worth of music, for twenty bucks. And we have The Well Said T-shirts, hats, stickers and band bands.)
