Hockey is Diversity e.V.

From our Hockey is Diversity friends in Germany.

A few days ago Hockey is Diversity was able to talk to NHL Nashville Predators Captain and Swiss Native 🇨🇭 Roman Josi about our tournament and that we use the opportunity to talk to the kids about racism, discrimination and inequality. We asked Roman about the importance of the NHL setting a strong sign against racism and what he would tell the kids of our tournament.
This is what Josi said: "I think it is important that we as players use our platform in the fight against racism. For us it is extremely important that equality applies to everyone, that we are part of this "change", that there is an end to racism. For us players this is extremely important. Everybody should have the same chances, no matter where they come from or what skin colour. Everyone deserves the same chance. For us players it is important that we have this conversation, that we talk about this topic. We want to be a part of the fight against racism. That's why we wore the t-shirts yesterday. Matt Dumba 🇵🇭 🇨🇦 had a speech before the game. We all listened carefully. We all want to be a part of the fight against racism!"

It is a challenge to celebrate the America that existed in 1776. That “America” was one steeped in every “ist” and “ism” imaginable; laying the foundation for a society by which people of color are still dehumanized on a daily basis. Everyone has rights, and Everyone is equal. #FourthofJuly

increasing awareness and supporting change for ice hockey

We hope everyone is doing well through these crazy times.

We just wanted to touch base as some rinks are beginning to open in the area. The current plan is to reschedule the game for Spring 2021 (March/April) for obvious health reasons to both our players and fans. We look forward to seeing everyone in the Spring.

In the meantime, you can learn more Players Against Hate at: https://playersagainsthate.org.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of Black Americans from slavery in the US. On this day in 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned that the Civil War had ended and slavery had been abolished. Juneteenth is a national holiday that is as important to the Black Community as the Fourth of July. ⁣

Posted @withregram • @nhlblak58 Out of the four major professional sports in the United States (football, baseball, basketball and ice hockey), ice hockey has been the Whitest.
Nearly all of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) players are White, and the well-known history of the sport would make people believe that Caucasians created and developed the sport on their own.

While history books showcase White players that date back to the 1800s, the roots of the sport actually comes from Native Americans, and the game was revolutionized by African Canadians. Black hockey players were critical in taking a game that was primitive, and helped create what we see today.

According to the book “Black Ice,” written by George and Darril Fosty, the sons and grandsons of American slaves who escaped to Canada were not given the proper credit for innovating the game.

The first reports of hockey being played dates back to 1815 along the Northwest Arm, which is a river south of Halifax in Canada. At that time, the region was not home to a large White settlement, but was instead the site of a small Black enclave. Reports say that the residents would play hockey in the winter months, when the river froze over. It is unknown whether or not these were the first ice hockey games, but it does mean that Blacks were playing the sport well before it became popular in the late 1800s.

As the development of the sport into contemporary ice hockey took place, the first organized indoor game was in Montreal in 1875, and by the mid 1890s, there were hundreds of teams in Canada and Europe. At this time, there was the first recorded mention of all-Black hockey teams, which appeared in 1895. By 1900, the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes (CHL) was created, and it was headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The CHL was initially a church league formed by Black Baptist Ministers and church administrators who wanted to use the league to help Blacks climb up the social latter and gain equal footing with the White community. They used sports as the catalyst. The league was based on faith, and emphasized sportsmanship and athleticism over brute force. The league used the Bible as their rulebook.

#REPOST • @thgchoir To be Silent is to be Complicit.
The burden falls on ALL of us to raise our voice to bring awareness. Fighting hate and intolerance IS NOT easy, or comfortable, or convenient. However if we want to live in a more peaceful world We must all do our part to point out Evil when we see it, and be a better bridge for the people who are most vulnerable among us.
If you are anti racist, say so. And let the people hear you (see you) say it. #thehomelessgospelchoir #thislandisyourlandfill

#REPOST • @nhlblak58 MOVIE RECOMMENDATION: “TOO COLOURFUL FOR THE LEAGUE”

Too Colourful for the League is a 52-minutes 2001 Canadian documentary film made for CBC-TV, directed by Daniel Cross and Mila Aung-Thwin and produced by Diversus Productions. The film was produced by Evan Beloff, Ari Cohen and Max Wallace, who were nominated for a Gemini Award for best documentary. It was written by Max Wallace and co-produced by Daniel Cross.
This documentary examines the struggle of blacks in hockey in Canada from the 1930s to the present day telling the story of black players' courage and determination to play in a white-dominated sport. It focuses on an effort by former Montreal citizenship judge Richard Lord to nominate legendary black hockey player Herb Carnegie into the Hockey Hall of Fame. During the 1940s, Carnegie was widely acknowledged as one of the best hockey players in the world, playing alongside Jean Béliveau for the Quebec Aces. Yet he never was allowed to play in the NHL because of a long-time color barrier, which was only broken a decade later by Willie O'Ree of the Boston Bruins. In the film, veteran Hockey Hall of Fame referee Red Storey recalls watching Carnegie try out for Toronto Maple Leafs owner Conn Smythe. According to Storey, Smythe turned to him and said, "I'd give $10,000 to turn that boy white."
It was broadcast by CBC, CTV, CBC Newsworld and Canal Plus.

Please consider supporting the Anti Flag crew during these tough times.

These days are not easy for any of us, our ability to help one another and pick each other up is the cornerstone of the punk rock community. With that in mind we are starting this campaign to make sure our crew can survive this moment where their work has been pulled out from under them.

100% of the money that comes in from this campaign will go directly to our crew. Each donation level comes with a surprise digital download from the Anti-Flag catalog as an extra thank you!

We understand that this period of shut down is tough for everyone. Thank you for giving what you can!

you can donate here: https://a-frecords.limitedrun.com/products/664387

Meet the crew:

Marc Code; longest tenured member of the A-F Crew. We first met and toured with Marc in 2003. His band The Code were one of the first releases on A-F Records. Marc sets our stage up at every show, handles the guitars and most likely is the one catching you when you come on stage for your moment of stage dive glory!

Josh Massie; jack of all trades. You’ve probably interacted with Massie more than any A-F crew member. Either behind the merch desk, the light desk, through his photo documentation of our touring (@scatteredpictures87), or through him being the most talented person in our world when it comes to social media. Josh represents everything we want our family to be. Creative, empathetic, and persistent.

Erik Pitluga; Erik came in when Pat Thetic was about to have his baby. We needed someone who could both drum tech for Pat but also be able to play the songs in case we got a call that the baby was coming! Erik has graced many stages, even filling in on guitar for Chris Head when he had his baby last year. Soft spoken, incredible drummer, kind human.

Zach: our driver/stage hand is a world traveler. He rode his bicycle across the country. Now he drives for us and when we are tired he drives us in the middle of the night. Being confident in Zach keeping us safe allows us to rest and get ready for the next show. Zach is also expecting a baby girl so this down time is especially challenging for him.
