Bonaventure University’s BA program in Theater offers small classes — the kind of classes you always hoped you’d find — with plenty of individual attention and mentoring. Whether it’s "Acting for the Camera," "Theatrical Design," "Shakespeare in Performance," or the "History of Musical Theater," you’ll be able to express yourself and grow your skills and knowledge in our theater labs and classes. And you’ll be taught by working theater professionals with decades of experience in theater and related media. SBU’s Theater program offers a diverse production season of classic and contemporary plays as well as premieres. From "The Burial at Thebes" to the full-production premiere of "More Than Before," to a Mardi Gras Twelfth Night" and Lisa Dillman’s "The Walls," SBU Theater offers the opportunity to get on-stage and technical production experience from your first semester in two performance spaces.

Mission: Why study theater at St. Bonaventure? *Because theater thrives in small, welcoming ensembles of passionate students. St. Bonaventure offers small classes and a supportive, welcoming theater environment. *Because theater works best when actors and techs share courses and common experiences. There’s no “actors versus techs” at SBU. Productions are created in a spirit of real collaboration. * Because theater is most effective when all its creators are versed in literature, science, art, music, history, languages and the classics. St. Bonaventure’s liberal arts curriculum encourages informed creativity in a compassionate and global context.

Operating as usual

03/13/2020

As some of our audience may have already heard, out of an abundance of caution, St. Bonaventure University has suspended in-person instruction, and will begin online classes starting Monday. Sadly, this means that we will not be able to perform Love/Sick next week. We are not willing to outright cancel the show at this point. It is however, indefinitely postponed. We will keep you updated as we know more.

So, SBU Theater could use a favor. We need 6 or 8 old record players/turn tables for our upcoming production. They don't actually have to work, but they do need to spin. And they will not likely survive our production, so we need to buy and/or have them donated, rather than borrow them EBay has them, but it's looking awfully costly. Anyone have an old turntable lying around that we could have? (Pictures are just examples; we're really flexible about appearance) Message us here, or e-mail Professor Misenheimer at [email protected]. Thanks!

Why ‘worthless’ humanities degrees may set you up for life

“I realised that the ability to communicate and get along with people, and understand what’s on other people’s minds, and do full-strength critical thinking – all of these things were valued and appreciated by everyone as important job skills, except the media.”

Why bother with degrees like History or English? Here’s why the liberal arts could leave you better prepared for employment than you think.

SBU Theater agrees wholeheartedly!

"The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts can lift us up." -- Barbara Jordan
