Children's Theatre drops claim against assault survivor for court costs

Days after starting proceedings to collect nearly $300,000 from a former student who was sexually assaulted by a staff member, Children's Theatre on Friday reversed course and apologized.

"Last week we failed in our commitment to be empathetic and respectful in our handling of our legal obligations," theater leaders said in a video statement directed to actor Laura Stearns, one of 17 people who filed civil suits against the theater for abuse suffered as children while students in the theater company's school.

PTSD: 5 Things You Need to Know

June is Posttraumatic Stress Awareness Month. About 7% of the U.S. population has PTSD at any given time, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Living with PTSD is difficult for the person who has it and for those around him/her. Most people associate PTSD with war veterans, but anyone can experience it following a traumatic event in which actual or the potential for serious harm was present.

Focus on traumatized boys critical to gender equality, new research shows

"This is the first global study to investigate how a cluster of traumatic childhood experiences known as ACEs, or adverse childhood experiences, work together to cause specific health issues in early adolescence, with terrible life-long consequences," Dr. Robert Blum, the lead researcher for the global early adolescent study, said in a statement. "While we found young girls often suffer significantly, contrary to common belief, boys reported even greater exposure to violence and neglect, which makes them more likely to be violent in return."

How ACEs Screening Can Break the Silence on Sexual Abuse

Despite its prevalence, child abuse as an epidemic is just making its way into the national discourse. We’ve long known the possible consequences of such trauma — shame, fear, self-blame, PTSD, depression, suicidal thoughts, and substance abuse. Because sexual abuse can lead to health issues, it deserves a healthcare solution. Child abuse isn’t something we should publicize once in a while: It’s time to take action.

"'I've been wanting to tell my story for a long time.'

With those words, Zach Miller began to talk, and shift in his seat, and stare into a dark space of his memory that still resides in an abandoned farmhouse near Kipling, Sask., where he was held as a sex slave when he was 10.
...
Miller was kidnapped in Whitewood, Sask., 10 years ago and driven to that farmhouse with another boy, who had been taken days earlier from Winnipeg. The boys were threatened with death, forced to watch pornography and repeatedly sexually assaulted for two days.

Miller's kidnapping led to Saskatchewan's first Amber Alert. The ordeal only ended after a farmer noticed a van that matched the description of the vehicle in the alert."

Not Just For Soldiers: Civilians With PTSD Struggle To Find Effective Therapy | WAMU

PTSD has long been associated with members of the military who have gone through combat, and with first-responders who may face trauma in their work. It’s also associated with survivors of sexual assault, car accidents and natural disasters. But researchers have also learned it can develop in adults who’ve experienced chronic childhood trauma — from physical, emotional or sexual abuse by caregivers, or from neglect or other violations of safety.

5 Victim-Shaming Myths That Harm Abuse and Trauma Survivors and Encourage Spiritual Bypassing

Research has shown the powerful detrimental effects of victim-blaming and victim-shaming statements. Studies have confirmed that when victims encounter negative reactions from professionals, family members, and friends, this destructively affects the willingness of victims to come forward to disclose their pain and only leads to further self-blame and uncertainty about their experiences (Williams, 1984; Ahrens, 2006). This is a harmful form of secondary gaslighting and victimization which needs to be reexamined and dismantled.

Helping Children Cope with Trauma

The intense, confusing, and frightening emotions that follow a traumatic event or natural disaster can be even more pronounced in children—whether they directly experienced the traumatic event or were repeatedly exposed to horrific media images after the fact. While children and adolescents are more vulnerable to being traumatized than adults, with the right support and reassurance, they are also able to recover faster. Using these coping tips, you can help your child regain an emotional balance, restore their trust in the world, and move on from the trauma.

I want to say a very big thank you to all of you that continue to support my work with EmpowerSurvivors and support survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

I started the 501 c3 nonprofit organization back in 2014 as I myself was healing from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse in my own life and wanted to do my part to break the silence that surrounds this terrible life altering crime.

I knew that survivors needed support and unfortunately there was not much out there supporting survivors that were suddenly triggered in adulthood and now dealing with the crimes done to them . What most people don't realize is that childhood sexual abuse affects 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys and a large majority will have several violators. Most never tell.

For many survivors they stayed silent due to shame, blame, threats from perpetrators or negative beliefs they believed due to this crime. I myself was told by one of my perpetrators that I "made him do this to me" and he would whisper this in my ear often as he abused me as a child. I was also told that my family would not understand and it was insinuated that if I told anyone everyone would know just how dirty and worthless I was.

I firmly believe all survivors of childhood sexual abuse need and deserve quality support while healing from this soul wrenching crime. Childhood sexual abuse or any child abuse cannot just be gotten over it must be processed and that means going back to those horrible memories and dissecting every part of it to dispel all the lies and hurt done. This is incredibly excruciating work healing from rape perpetrated to you as a child which makes it even more vital we have good support systems in place for those wishing to find true healing.

Today I continue the work of healing for myself and others. EmpowerSurvivors offers safe spaces of healing , peer support programs for those affected by childhood sexual abuse, workshops, classes and a annual "Giving Voice Conference".

My hope is to expand EmpowerSurvivors so more individuals and families that have suffered abuse can find healing and resources but I need your help to continue this work.

To date I have never received federal or state grants to run our nonprofit. I pour my heart and soul into this organization and receive no income. For me this is not only a organization but a mission but that being said I need help to continue the work we are doing here at EmpowerSurvivors.

To date our donations have come from people like you and my own private savings.

Your donations and Facebook fundraisers help provide healing resources to survivors, office space, keeps the electricity, heat and air conditioning going and helps supply office supplies and essentials needed to keep our organization up and running efficiently.

My hope is to continue building this community which is located in Stillwater,MN and expand to other areas so survivors have more resources. I also am hoping at some point to be able to have a wage for the countless hours I put into the work being done. To do this I need your help to continue the work of healing those in our communities.

Child Abuse as a Public Health Issue - One in Ten

Research indicates that 15-20 percent of girls and 5-10 percent of boys in the United States are affected by child sexual abuse. Those are numbers that should make everyone sit up and take notice, and yet one of the biggest funding gaps we see in our field is the lack of government support for research on how to prevent this abuse. Instead of a public health issue, child sexual abuse is still seen by many as a criminal justice problem. In this episode, we talk to Dr. Elizabeth Letourneau of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse about what policies she sees as fundamentally flawed, where the bright spots are, and why prevention should be a federal priority.

How to Implement Trauma-informed Care to Build Resilience to Childhood Trauma - Child Trends

Children who are exposed to traumatic life events are at significant risk for developing serious and long-lasting problems across multiple areas of development.[1],[2],[3],[4] However, children are far more likely to exhibit resilience to childhood trauma when child-serving programs, institutions, and service systems understand the impact of childhood trauma, share common ways to talk and think about trauma, and thoroughly integrate effective practices and policies to address it—an approach often referred to as trauma-informed care (TIC).[5]

When Being Trauma-Informed Is Not Enough

Trauma-informed care is the new gold standard. For the last several years, Echo has been providing professional development in trauma-informed care but we’re beginning to notice a worrying aspect of the new push to train staff and transform systems. Some human service professionals are seeing ‘trauma-informed care’ as another skill to add to their resume or a box to check off on a grant proposal. But if the information stays with the professionals and is not used to empower survivors, then haven’t we missed the point?
