Wild Things: Whale of a Fishing Tale: Bortolini Tops Salmon Tournament Field - Door County Pulse

Hear from the 2020 K/D winner, Angelo Bortolini, and read about another fishing contest this weekend in Kewaunee County waters.

Angelo Bortolini might want to get his son, Scott, an extra Christmas present this year. Scott introduced his father to Harold Shaw, a fellow teetotaler, about a decade ago. Fast forward to Tuesday morning, July 21, when the 77-year-old Bortolini and his 74-year-old friend โ€“ who owns the boat they...

A total of 3,290 tickets were sold in the 38th Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament, smashing the previous best of 3,049 set in 2016.

Sturgeon Bay's two outlets sold the most tickets: Howie's Tackle & Archery and Greystone Castle combined for 985. Algoma BP and JP Express in Algoma combined for 948. Those were both all-time records for the port communities. There were 1,689 tickets sold in Kewaunee County and 1,601 in Door County, but anglers could fish off any port on the K/D Peninsula.

Breaking a streak of Northern Door wins, Algoma and Kewaunee fish combined to take seven of the top 11 spots, including the winner for 77-year-old Angelo Bortolini of Kewaunee. He used a Moonshine spoon to lure a fish of a lifetime โ€” 41-1/2 inches and 32.78 pounds โ€” early July 21 off his home port while fishing with friend Harold Shaw of Kewaunee. They'll split the $10,000 first place cash, while Bortolini wins a free mount of the fish from Twin Rivers Taxidermy and a custom sterling silver salmon ring with a black diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer of Wisconsin Charm.

In second was another two-person team, Todd Smith of Brussels and Rob Joniaux of Luxemburg. Smith's 40-1/2-inch, 31.58-pounder hit a Howie Fly off Algoma hours before sunset July 23. The great catch earns $6,000 cash and a Howie's Tackle & Archery prize package.

A third two-in-a-boat combo to score big were Jesse Picard of Little Suamico and his girlfriend, Maddie Jorgenson. The 39-1/2-inch, 31.35-pounder they caught hit a Moonshine spoon about an hour after sunrise July 22. Their dawn date results in a $4,000 payday and a $200 shopping spree at Accurate Marine & Tackle in Kewaunee.

The K/D Committee used the record ticket sales to boost the dollar amounts for the top 20 percent of the places this year, but still paid down 146 spots. Any fish 23 pounds and up made the final payout.

Combined with the daily port prizes, K/D awards and sponsor prizes, more than $55,000 in cash and prizes will be shared among the winners. After expenses, the remainder of the proceeds from this year's contest is banked to make sure the 39th annual event โ€” set for July 23-31, 2021 โ€” has a solid foundation.

Angelo Bortolini of Kewaunee is the unofficial winner of the 2020 Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament with a 41-1/2-inch, 32.78-pound chinook he reeled in with friend Harold Shaw off their home port of Kewaunee early Tuesday, July 21.

If everything checks out โ€” and there's been no reason to believe there's anything "fishy" with this catch โ€” Bortolini will get a call Monday night after the K/D Committee meets with the official word that he's the 2020 winner of the top prize valued at more than $11,000, including $10,000 cash, a free mount of his trophy by Twin Rivers Taxidermy and a custom-made, sterling silver salmon ring with a black diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer of Wisconsin Charm.

Todd Smith of Brussels is in the No. 2 spot with a 31.58-pounder he caught early in the evening on Thursday, July 23, off Algoma. Second place earns a $6,000 check and a Howie's Tackle & Archery prize package.

Jesse Picard of Little Suamico is in the third spot with a 31.35-pounder caught early Wednesday, July 22, off Kewaunee while fishing with his girlfriend, Maddie Jorgenson of Green Bay. Third place is a $4,000 check.

The final payout will be based on the number of daily and full tournament tickets sold at 10 locations. Anecdotally, at least, sales appear to be strong enough to challenge the record of 3,049 participants in 2016.

Final, official results will be posted late Monday night on the K/D Salmon Tournament page at https://www.facebook.com/kdsalmon2020/.

The 39th annual event is scheduled for July 23-31, 2021. A decision on the 2022 dates will be made at Monday's meeting.

We've had some excellent television coverage of the K/D this season by Fox 11, WFRV 5 and the latest from avid outdoorsman Jeff Alexander of WBAY. Meant to post all the links but it's been a crazy-busy tournament, thanks to all of you!

Lake Michigan Salmon Tournament draws thousands of anglers

With so many events cancelled this summer due to the coronavirus, an annual salmon tournament along the lakeshore is proving to be a big attraction with near record participation.

Four new anglers moved into the top 25 Friday, Day 8 of the 9-day Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament.

Catches were down, likely a combination of changing water conditions from the ever-changing winds and currents and โ€” in some areas, at leastโ€” clinging weeds and Russian fishhook fleas, which required anglers to often check and clean lines.

Some of it could also be chalked up to fishing pressure, which was very high off most ports. However, we can't really say for sure why salmon action is hot one day and not the next. So many factors to consider. The good news is, even on a slow day, all it takes is one "right" bite and your fortunes can change quickly!

On Friday, a trio of 27s and a 28-pound-plus chinook were the largest of the day.

The first and last fish of the day at Washington Island were the biggest. Daniel Petersilka of Sturgeon Bay brought in a 38-1/2-inch, 27.44-pounder that hit a fly down 80 in 150 feet of water about an hour after sunrise. He sits in 23rd place. Not to be outdone, Ken Roche of Menasha (pictured) took the port prize with a few minutes to spare, bringing in a 28.64-pounder that hit a spoon 60 down in 150 feet of water about 8 p.m. That one moved into the No. 12 spot.

Scott Vandenvelden of Shiocton used a spoon to connect with a 27.68-pounder mid-morning at Baileys Harbor. He moved into the 21st spot.

Jeff Hartmann of Cleveland used a spoon 100 down in 115 feet of water off Algoma to lure a 27.19-pounder. The fish, currently 24th, hit around 5:30 a.m.

The 2020 โ€œK/Dโ€ wraps up tonight (Saturday) at 9 p.m. Daily tickets ($13) are still available.

There were only four moves within the top 25 on Thursday, Day 7 of the 9-day Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament. But boy, were they were some big ones!

Todd Smith of Brussels (left) moved into second place with a 40-1/2-inch, 31.58-pound giant of a โ€œkingโ€ that hit a Howie Fly 55 feet down in 129 feet of water about two hours before sunset at Algoma. He's shown with fishing partner Rob Joniaux of Luxemburg.

Bill Hackett's 29.27-pounder, caught late Wednesday and weighed this morning, moved into the 10th spot by dayโ€™s end.

Two other additions to the Top 25 were a port prize winner for Luke Ebel at Sturgeon Bay, 27.07 pounds, and a 26.90-pounder for Justin Schneider at Algoma.

Winds are expected to be favorable for all anglers today and early tomorrow before picking up steam for the second half of the day Saturday.

(Missing one of the nightly reports, so canโ€™t update the leaderboard until Thursday). The biggest news Wednesday was a true fish tale out of Kewaunee: a 39-1/2-inch, 31.35-pound chinook caught by Jesse Picard of Little Suamico. He was out with his girlfriend, Maddie Jorgenson of Green Bay, when the monster smacked a spoon set about 25 feet down in 120 feet of water around 7 a.m. About 13 hours later, Gloria Cloutier of Fairbould, Minn., won a battle with a 38-1/2-inch, 28.84-pounder that hit a flasher/fly set about halfway down in 104 feet of water at Algoma. With six others aboard, it was a wild ride back to port; the crew arrived at the weigh station with just minutes to spare. The top 100 salmon are now all larger than 23 pounds. Northeast winds could make it a bit sporty Thursday, but things are expected to settle down later before winds move to the south at 5 to 10 knots Friday. A south flow is predicted again Saturday as heat and humidity builds away from the lake. ๏ฟฝTickets are still available for the tournament, which ends at 9 p.m. Saturday. Get yours โ€” $25 for the final three days of the tournament or $13 for a daily chance โ€” at any of the five official weigh-in locations: Accurate Marine & Tackle in Kewaunee, Algoma BP, Howie's Tackle & Archery in Sturgeon Bay, Baileys 57 in Baileys Harbor, or B&K Bait and Tackle @ Kap's Marina on Washington Island. Tickets are also available 24 hours a day at JP Express in Algoma and JP Express on Hwy. 42 just north of Carlsville. Greystone Castle in Sturgeon Bay and Center Court Convenience in Kewaunee are additional ticket-only outlets. For daily updates and pictures of some of the trophy catches, visit https://www.facebook.com/kdsalmon2020.
