April's Puppet Ruckus was a smash with a packed house and a fantastic line-up of performances. We're doing it again October 24 at the Mira Theatre in Vallejo!

Our featured performance will be by Bay Area legend Mary Nagler, plus Ilene Kennedy, Jennifer Kruss and others soon to be announced. Keep watching Puppet Ruckus for more updates!

Saturday's Puppet Ruckus was a rare event, the likes of which may possibly only be matched by next October's Puppet Ruckus. We had 7 shows spanning from amateur debuts to finely crafted and orchestrated productions. In-between sets, Dani Joy sang and played her ukulele beautifully, sometimes taking requests and often inspiring the audience to sing along.

Savannah (age 7) and Sterling (age 5) Eiess and I performed a short, impromptu performance called "Storytime" with glove and rod puppets in a booth stage. The story: Wormy unjustly accuses Doggie of tripping her and tries to create an evil curse potion. The plan backfires when the potion becomes a love potion and causes an owl and a flower to fall in love.

The point of this sketch was to encourage young and amateur performers to find their own joy in puppetry. Based on the written critiques I received, many in the audience appreciated this as an example of an exercise that is very suitable for kids to participate in.

Jennifer Kruss performed "Someone to Watch Over Me", acapella with a really nice Mary Nagler hand and rod puppet in the booth stage. I have heard some of Jen's many puppet voices before, but had never heard her impressive singing.

Bernie Beauchamp performed "Marionette Marvels", starting with a killer LED/black light-style bit with a skeleton who lights up in the dark and sings Squirrel Nut Zippers' "Hell". Bernie stood behind the puppet and halfway through the act, his suit lit up as a skeleton too. I loved it.

His second marionette was a cabaret clown that juggled balls on its head and feet. The third was a marionette that sang to "Just a Gi**lo". Those were neat, but I really, really liked the skeleton bit.

Puppet Progression did a magic and puppetry act with a Folkmanis English Sheepdog puppet that got some great laughs from the kids. They loved when Raw Lee kept grabbing at things and mysteriously always had a ball in his mouth.

During the intermission, Savannah Eiess put out a trunk of her hand puppets for other kids to play with. I also had a donations-only snack spread with celery, carrots, hummus, crackers, cheese, salami, Easter candy, sweet tea and water for folks to help themselves to. I think I made back 2/3 of my cost, but when the show ran long, I think the snacks saved us and kept audience members from wandering off to find meals. In the future, I think I'll build some of the cost into the ticket prices.

After intermission, Puppet Progression performed the second half of his "English Hijinx" act with all new magic tricks. Magic Lee even did a couple I haven't seen before. All went well.

Dangerous Puppets pulled out all the stops for their performance of "The Jabberwocky". They had a narrator/barker dressed in Dickens' attire, a live violinist, and a set made of wicked-looking iron and cloth screens with painted canvas backdrops. They used marionettes, rod puppets and shadow puppets- all twisted and surreal-looking like something from a dream.

The Jabberwocky story was recited by the audience and narrator via wood shingles with the words painted on them. I had seen this show before at the Dickens Faire back when they had all the sound recorded. I thoroughly enjoyed it even then, but the live version is spectacularly better.

It was at this point that we had to move the last 2 Puppet Ruckus performances into the lounge/kitchen due to miscommunication with the property manager. Human error happens. We lost some of our audience in the move, but still kept a good number of them- possibly because we moved closer to the snacks, and because wonderful Mary Nagler filled time with some impromptu magic tricks.

Noh Hands Theatre (me, and Vincent - age 14, and Yalena Hernandez - age 12) and Matt Walker from Comedy Spot performed a 3-part puppet improv act called "Little Red Blanking Hood". The first part was a MadLibs-type story with word suggestions taken from the audience before the show. The second part was questions (also audience suggested) asked each "actor" as though they were on a panel at a con and the last part was an improvised "preview" of an upcoming feature, based on audience suggestions. We got a few laughs and had such a good time that Vincent and Yalena's little brother was begging me to be part of the next Puppet Ruckus improv. Success!

The final act was the most polished one-person act I have probably ever seen- all in a rainbow-colored booth stage with painted curtain backdrops. Mary Nagler performed "The Reluctant Dragon" live, including 6 characters and 3 scene changes without missing a beat, crossing a voice, losing altitude or any of those many, many pitfalls with hand puppets. Each puppet was charming, but Herkamer the Dragon (the main character) had extra Henson-like charm and life. Aside from the acts I was in (of course), this was my 6yo son's favorite part of the Puppet Ruckus.

I have many people to thank. Thank you everyone who helped me promote this show. We packed the theater! Thank you to all my performers, especially Dani Joy for brightening our between-act segues as needed with zero notice; Mary Nagler for jumping in with magic tricks to entertain audience members as they settled into the lounge AND being so gracious when we needed to re-set up her stage in the lounge after she just got set up in the theater; Vincent and Yalena Hernandez for doing a great job manning the box office; Beth Eiess for hosting my puppet troupe the night before and keeping the snack area stocked; Matt Walker for not only talking to complete strangers to gather fodder for our sketch, but also acting as tour guide for new arrivals; Jennifer Kruss and Bernie Beauchamp for helping other people set up/break down and generally being chronically upbeat; Tina Arriola for giving me a killer deal on the Black Box rental and my husband Doug Leonard for videotaping the show on our 2 phones and tablet (we filled them all) and always being my calm in the storm.
