It's National Philanthropy Day! THANK YOU to the many donors, foundations, and supporters who make our work possible. This year, your support allowed us to help Holocaust survivors, undocumented immigrant children, low wage workers, elders at risk of abuse, and small businesses struggling under COVID-19, to name just a few examples. In all, we have helped twice as many people as we did in 2019. Thank you for your support of our mission.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was always a passionate and dedicated voice for justice and equality who kept us looking towards the future with hope and resolve. May her memory be a blessing and a continued inspiration in our pursuit towards justice for all.

Bet Tzedek - The House of Justice recently joined an open letter with Public Rights Project and many other public interest legal organizations urging state bars to cancel bar examinations this year and award full diploma privilege to recent law school graduates! Both in-person and online exams exacerbate inequities affecting applicants of color, lower-income applicants, and applicants with disabilities, and COVID-19 has only made the need for licensed public interest lawyers greater.

CA Assembly Labor Committee votes on #SB1399 TODAY! Wage theft in LA’s garment industry is so bad that workers risk their health to stay at the few jobs paying minimum wage even if they are unsafe workplaces. CA must pass SB1399 so workers are paid #OneLegalWage industry wide! The people most impacted will be the workers making our masks who will finally be able to make what they deserve & hold brands accountable for wage theft in the industry.

Awesome Teen Vogue article on #SB1399!
"Popular fast fashion names like Fashion Nova and Forever 21 have all come under scrutiny for claiming to support movements like Black Lives Matter, all the while being accused of underpaying their garment workers. California's Garment Worker Protection Act hopes to ensure fair pay for California garment workers."
"The Garment Worker Protection Act was authored by Californian Senator Maria Elena Durazo and sponsored by Garment Worker Center, Bet Tzedek - The House of Justice, the California Labor Federation, and Western Center on Law & Poverty. 'I am grateful to my Senate colleagues for approving the Garment Worker Protection Act of 2020,' Durazo said, per Apparel News. 'It is time that we demand better working conditions for women and just hourly pay for garment workers, who, when paid by the piece, earn on average $5.15 per hour.'"

Another great article from the Los Angeles Times highlighting the problems with PACE, this time featuring Public Counsell clients. PACE loans devastate families and communities. It's time for local officials to make things right for people tricked into loans they can’t afford, and to prevent more bad loans.

Thanks to Chair Senator Anthony Portantino, 25th Districtino and Sens. Steve Bradford, Jerry Hill, Connie M. Leyva, and Bob Wieckowski for your support of #SB1399.
Bet Tzedek - The House of Justice joins Garment Worker Center, California Labor Federation, and Western Center on Law & Poverty in calling on Sen. Toni G. Atkins and the California State Senate to PASS the Garment Worker Protection Act. The bill eliminates the piece rate system—the primary driver of wage theft in the garment industry—in favor of #OneLegalWage. SB 1399 protects garment workers who are sewing critical #PPE in the fight against #COVID19, ensures they are paid a fair wage for their work, and empowers workers to invest in their families and communities.
Special thanks to Maria Elena Durazo for your inspiring leadership!

BREAKING: Los Angeles County has ended its controversial Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing program, which was intended to help Angelenos make energy-efficient home improvements but instead became a breeding ground for consumer fraud and abuse. For the last several years, Bet Tzedek - The House of Justice has consistently pressed for additional consumer protections and oversight, and we are gratified that the County has made this decision to protect vulnerable and low-income homeowners by ending the County PACE program.
