Relay For Life of SoWashCo

Relay For Life of SoWashCo Relay For Life South Washington County brings the community together to raise funds for the American Cancer Society! Call 1-800-227-2345 for cancer information, any time, day or night.
Over $4 Billion dollars have been raised by Relay events across the country since the first Relay in 1985. Relay For Life South Washington County is the largest Relay in Minnesota for 2010, 2011, and 2012. Join us in our goal to raise $300,000 for the American Cancer Society and a world with less cancer and more birthdays! Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

June 9th 2017 HEATHEAST SPORTS CENTER 4125 Radio Drive, Woodbury. (Bielenberg Center) Commencement 5:00 pm Opening Ceremony: 6:00 pm Closing Ceremony: 12:30 am June 10 What Happens at a Relay Event There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below: Survivors Lap Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Mission: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lived and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

#TBT to the breathtaking sight of luminaria bags lining the track as we honor and remember those in our lives that have had cancer.

Seeing hundreds of names written on these bags reminds us WHY we continue to Relay, year after year. We Relay so that one day, we won't have to decorate bags for our loved ones and no one will have to hear the words "You have cancer."

Thank you to On a Wing and a Prayer for this week's picture.

If you would like to purchase a luminaria bag to be displayed at our event, visit www.relay.org/sowashcomn.

#TBT to 9 year old Colin and 16 year old Miya using their story to fight back against cancer and inspiring the creation of the very first Relay For Life of Woodbury (now South Washington County) nearly 20 years ago. What started as a small group of passionate volunteers rallying around these young survivors has grown into a night where hundreds of our neighbors and friends can come together to celebrate our survivors, remember those we have lost, and fight for a world free of cancer.

Our first #ThrowbackThursday as we celebrate our 20th Relay For Life season!

Justin and Brandon Alpers have been Relaying since before they were born. The top picture was taken at the 2005 Relay For Life when Justin was 5 years old and Brandon was 2. In 2018, as a high school senior, Justin was a leader of the High Schoolers Against Cancer chapter at East Ridge High School. Brandon is currently a sophomore at East Ridge and is an active member of HAC.

Do you have a good throwback picture from Relay? Send it our way and tell us a bit about the picture! We've made some amazing memories in the last 19 years and we want to share them with all of you!

This week, we’d like to highlight our top fundraising team: On A Wing & A Prayer!

This amazing group started Relaying in 2004 and has been leading the fight ever since. They continue to come back year after year because they know that cancer happens to everyone, and they can see results of what their fundraising is doing. While all of them have their own personal stories and connections with cancer, everyone comes together with one goal in mind.

On A Wing & A Prayer continues to inspire us with their passion to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. While each person on their team does individual fundraising, they also have a lot of success with team fundraisers. They host bake sales twice a year that are always a hit, along with a Christmas Boutique and a Craft Fair. A word of advice for new teams…plan your fundraisers early and look for new ideas. Work together, set goals, and communicate often.

Thank you to everyone on On A Wing & A Prayer-we couldn’t do it without you and are grateful for your support year after year.

What does your team do to reach your fundraising goals? Leave a comment below! We’d love to share ideas to help our teams grow!

Latest Senate Health Bill is Worse for Patients

This bill would leave patients and those with pre-existing conditions paying more for less coverage and would substantially erode the progress our nation has been trying to make in providing affordable, adequate and meaningful coverage to all Americans.
