GIRLSCHOOL is a Los Angeles-based women-led music festival, online platform, and collective that celebrates and connects women-identified artists, leaders, and voices.
Originally founded by Anna Bulbrook (the Bulls | the Airborne Toxic Event | Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) in response to how few women she saw onstage in the alternative rock world, GIRLSCHOOL has grown into a vibrant volunteer network of women in music who connect to create an empowering community for one another while supporting women and girls. A portion of the proceeds from every GIRLSCHOOL event benefits a girl-positive organization.
Mission: Our mission is to celebrate, connect, and lift excellent women-identified and gender-expanded artists, leaders, and voices.

Hello new friends! I'm here to post a little "call-to-arms" as it were, but let me introduce myself first, and then if you could read on to see if you could help out, I'd be grateful! ๐
Hi, I'm Tanya! I recently moved to Brisbane, Australia from Hobart, Australia. I work alternately in Events (Festivals) and Healthcare (Nursing), and I've also recently become involved at our local radio station 4ZZZ, which has become an awesome highlight of my day-to-day life.
And also leads me to the reason for my post!
We're trying to increase female airtime at 4ZZZ! Because: D'uh. One of the arguments against it that Management are coming across, however, is 'reverse discrimination' ... due to the fact that a male-dominated industry ends up sending us male-dominated music (whaaaaaat? How does that even happen - weird, right?), it's seen by some as unfair to have to actively seek out female music in our library that has a much, much larger selection of male music (of which there's a bloody huge selection of wonderfully talented dudes, by the way. We just want to include OTHER wonderful music by people who aren't necessarily dudes as well). Our library is run by AMAZING volunteers who do an AMAZING job, FYI - but they only get sent what they get sent!
SO. Do any of you have any female music hiding up your sleeves that might not be in our music library? Could you please send it in? And if you know anyone else who might be able to send in female music - from anywhere in the world - we'd love to hear from them as well! Whilst 4ZZZ is always aiming to promote local and Australian music - we can play anyone!
Some of our shows are pretty specifically themed - so there are some on the team who may find it harder to source female content for their particular niche, regardless of how willing they are. Oh, and here's the added bonus - it doesn't even need to be an ALL-FEMALE band! Anything that has a minimum of 1 HUMAN FEMALE makes the cut! Woweee, right?
** Other issues that might come up if some people are struggling to play music that represents HALF THE POPULATION - are the also-suggested increased airtime of non-binary and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander folk. So the call out should go out on their behalf, too.
